action

In Springfield in the US -amerikanischen State Illinois there is one night to unusual events. Workers repair a power line to restore power to Mrs. Darlington's house when the lines suddenly explode. Shortly afterwards, a spaceship appears above the building and disappears on the horizon. The old lady goes to the police and tells Detective Samuel Adams about her experience, who at first doesn't believe her. The following day, single Karen's daughter , Tammy, is kidnapped. The criminal known to the police, Raymond, lured the girl away from his bicycle and kidnapped her, but shortly afterwards carefully places her in front of the house of the police officer Samuel Adams. Before he leaves, he transfers the contents of a computer chip into her brain via the palm of her hand. Adams finds the child and can bring it back to the overjoyed mother. When he arrives at her house, he reports that his own wife disappeared without a trace four years ago and that he can empathize with the mother's fears. Karen quickly realizes that Tammy is no longer the same girl. She recites apparently confused nursery rhymes, draws strange pictures with aliens and writes down endless, binary columns of numbers - which, however, initially neither Karen nor Adams notice. She also wants to meet "Emmett from Sector 238". Karen and Adams can't figure it out. Adams asks his uncle, Senator Ben Arnold, if he knows that the military is doing experiments in the area, but he says no such activities.

Meanwhile, Adams clashes with FBI agent Naples. This has caught the fugitive Raymond and interrogates him. Raymond looks confused because he warns the agent of an impending alien invasion. Shortly thereafter, Raymond is shot dead by a patrol officer in the interrogation room. Adams gradually realizes that those around him are changing. They were previously kidnapped by the aliens and provided with an implant that turns them into mindless creatures of the aliens "at the push of a button". They want to gradually conquer the earth and plan a large invasion with the help of their spaceships. Senator Arnold cooperates with the aliens because he has been promised to act as the representative head of humanity after they come to power. Adams penetrates the Naples PDA and realizes that the hostile attack is to begin in a "Section 238". He continues to get the names of some of the victims who have been lamented since the strange Springfield events.

Naples realizes that Tammy is a threat to the entire operation. She has the coordinates of the place in her brain where the aliens want to transport their spaceships to earth. He pursues Tammy, who, with the help of Adams and the resistance movement around her leader, Emmett, can get to safety. Adams learns from Emmett that some people are immune to the implant and that they absolutely want to prevent the arrival of the aliens. They get Tammy to write down the columns of numbers again and thus receive the access data to the aliens' transponder location. When they are handed over to high-ranking officials, however, they must realize that they have been betrayed, because Emmett and his companions are shot. And Adams, who survived the firefight, also has to realize that his uncle has sided with the aliens. He hides Tammy and Karen with Mrs. Darlington and sets off with the last survivor of the Carrie resistance group to the transponder location, a large power station . But Carrie was also implanted with a chip and she cannot defend herself against the reprogramming. There is a fight between Carrie and Adams, in which she finally shoots herself.

Adams is now on his own and enters the power plant. He can place several explosive charges before a duel with Naples. He reveals to Adams that his wife was also implanted but did not survive the procedure. Naples is overwhelmed and Adams is able to detonate the charges. Shortly before the enemy spaceships reach earth, the transponder is destroyed and the spaceships burn up in the atmosphere. Adams returns to Mrs. Darlington, where Karen and Tammy are already waiting for him.

In the final sequence, however, it becomes clear that one of the enemy spaceships still exists.
