Scrubs - Med School refers to the ninth season of the US American hospital dramedy series Scrubs - The Beginners . It dates from 2009. There have been major changes in the cast and the scenery compared to the previous seasons. It is about young medical students and their lecturers at the fictional Winston University . The spin-off title was only used in Austria, however, in Germany ProSieben also used the title Scrubs for the ninth season for marketing reasons .

background

The eighth season of Scrubs was originally intended to be the final season. In May 2009 the television station ABC , which had already produced the eighth season of Scrubs, announced a continuation of the series with 13 episodes. At first it was unclear how the series should be continued and who should work on it. John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox) and Donald Faison (Turk) were the first to sign one-year contracts and remained permanent cast members alongside Eliza Coupe (Denise) as the only members of the original cast . Other people from the original cast can be seen in supporting or guest roles or are no longer featured at all.

Series creator Bill Lawrence suggested promoting the series as an entirely new one called Scrubs Med , but ABC declined. Lawrence urged fans to treat it like a new series and even put the title [Med School] under “Created by” in the opening credits. The film was shot at Culver Studios in Culver City .

Seasons 6-8 producers Neil Goldman , Garrett Donovan and Bill Callahan have been replaced by Jonathan Groff , Zach Braff and Josh Bycel . Bycel also acted as co- show runner alongside Bill Lawrence, who, in addition to Scrubs, also oversaw his then new series Cougar Town .

All previous seasons screenwriters, with the exception of Bill Lawrence and Andy Schwartz , left the Scrubs staff.

action

The season revolves around Lucy Bennett, a young medical student at Winston University who - like JD in previous seasons - reveals her thoughts and feelings in voice-overs and daydreams. The newly built Sacred Heart Hospital is located on the university campus , after the original hospital had to be demolished mainly due to financial problems.

In addition to the usual difficulties that medical students are confronted with, the focus here is on the different characters of the main actors and their relationships with one another. Above all, the relationship between the teaching staff, which is composed exclusively of actors from the original cast, and the students, who did not appear in previous seasons, is described. In addition to Lucy, it is above all the narcissistic ripper Cole Aaronson and Drew Suffin, who already began a medical training once, whose relationships with Professors Dr. John "JD" Dorian, Dr. Christopher Turk and Dr. Percival Cox as well as Drew's future girlfriend, study advisor Dr. Denise Mahoney, who was also part of the series in the eighth season, will be examined in more detail.

occupation

Replacement

Main cast

  • Lucy Bennett ( Kerry Bishé , German speaker: Julia Meynen ), a hard-working medical student and the focus of the season. She has difficulties with her studies and Dr. Cox. She also developed feelings for Cole over the course of the season. She is a great horse lover, which is particularly evident in her room decorations.
  • Drew Suffin ( Michael Mosley , German speaker: Tim Knauer ) began studying medicine ten years ago, but was then in prison. He's the favorite student of Dr. Cox and with Denise.
  • Cole Aaronson ( Dave Franco , German speaker: Konrad Bösherz ), his parents donated a lot of money to build the university, which is why he sees himself as "inviolable" and often goes overboard. He sometimes pretends to be a playboy , but develops an affection for Lucy.

Supporting cast

Original cast

Main cast

  • Prof. Dr. John Michael "JD" Dorian ( Zach Braff ), protagonist of the previous seasons, can be seen in six episodes as a university professor. Zach Braff stated that if the season continues after the first 13 episodes he will return to the permanent cast.
  • Prof. Dr. Christopher Duncan Turk ( Donald Faison ), head of surgery and professor at the university, is, in contrast to his wife Carla ( Judy Reyes ), who does not appear at all this season, still part of the hospital staff and one of the most important contacts for the young people Students.
  • Prof. Dr. Percival Ulysses "Perry" Cox ( John C. McGinley ) is still chief physician at Sacred Heart Hospital and also a professor. As in the previous seasons, he tries to prepare the "murderers and assassins", as he calls the students, for their lives as doctors and sometimes uses harder means. His often cynical and insulting tone causes difficulties especially for Lucy, who finds help, however, especially with JD and Elliot, to act against him.
  • Dr. Denise Mahoney ( Eliza Coupe ) was seen in the eighth season in a supporting role as a doctor in an internship and is now the main character as a study advisor and assistant to the professors. She begins a relationship with Drew in the first episode.

Supporting cast

  • Prof. Dr. Robert "Bob" Kelso ( Ken Jenkins , 9 episodes) teaches at Winston University after the death of his wife Enid and lives out his joy in the opposite sex. For this purpose, he set up a "love nest" in the student apartment of a dropout because he is uncomfortable having sex with other women in Enid's bed at home.
  • Dr. Todd Quinlan ( Robert Maschio ) can be seen in seven episodes as a surgeon at the New Sacred Heart Hospital and is now relatively openly bisexual .
  • Dr. Elliot Reid ( Sarah Chalke ) appears in four episodes. She works in a private practice outside the Sacred Heart Hospital and is expecting a child with JD, with whom she is now married.

Guest appearances

  • The caretaker ( Neil Flynn ) is only seen in a brief scene in the first episode when he is shown disappearing from the hospital forever after learning that JD will no longer work there.
  • Theodore "Ted" Buckland ( Sam Lloyd , 1 episode) resigns from his job as a hospital lawyer in order to drive around the country with Gooch.
  • Stephanie Gooch ( Kate Micucci , 1 episode)
  • Sonya Dey ( Sonal Shah , 1 episode)
  • Jordan Sullivan ( Christa Miller , 1 episode)

particularities

The names of the episodes of this season, in contrast to those of the previous seasons, no longer begin with “My” (in German: “Mein (e)”), but with “Our” (in German: “Unser (e)”).

Broadcast Notes

The season ran for the first time from December 1, 2009 to March 17, 2010 on ABC under the name Scrubs and was advertised as the ninth season. The audience ratings were below those of the previous seasons and fell continuously, which is why the series was not continued. The episode Our Role Models had the highest number of viewers with 5.44 million viewers.

In Germany, the ninth season ran from February 1, 2011 to March 15, 2011 on ProSieben . In Austria it was broadcast from January 29, 2011 to May 7, 2011. The Austrian television broadcaster ORF eins ran this season under the changed title Scrubs - Med School , but, like ProSieben, did not market it as a spin-off , but as a ninth season.
