The Ruang is the southernmost active volcano in the arc of the Sangihe Islands , Indonesia . The stratovolcano rises around 1700 meters above the sea floor; the summit with a height of 725 meters above sea level is east of the crater with a diameter of about 500 meters. The volcanic island is almost five kilometers long and about four kilometers wide.
The first eruption of the Ruang in historical times took place in 1808. In an eruption in 1870, a village on the island was destroyed and an unknown number of people died. In 1871, an outbreak triggered a tsunami that killed around 400 people on the neighboring island of Tahulandang . On Ruang, the plantations on the slopes of the volcano were destroyed. In 1949 a lava dome formed in the crater.
During a strong eruption on September 25, 2002, an eruption column about 20 kilometers high rose. A pyroclastic current destroyed an area of 1.6 km² in the southeast of the island. Buildings in two villages were badly damaged by heavy ash fall . Around 1,000 islanders had been evacuated before the outbreak.
