The Highligen Three Kings (Original title: The Night Before ) is an American comedy film directed by Jonathan Levine from 2015 . Joseph Gordon-Levitt , Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie can be seen in the leading roles .

After the young Ethan Miller lost his parents in a car accident in 2001, best friends Isaac and Chris spend Christmas with him every year. Now, in 2015, Isaac, now an expectant father, and Chris, now a famous football player, plan to end that tradition as they want to focus on their family and careers.
When the last Christmas Eve together finally approaches, the three friends meet at Isaac's. Together they roam the streets of New York and visit the Rockefeller Center , among other places . There Ethan surprises his friends with tickets to the annual "Nutcracker" ball, which the three have wanted to go to since childhood. They plan to attend the ball that evening. Chris also meets his former teacher, Mr. Green, and buys marijuana from him , which Mr. Green calls The Present .
The three friends move on to a karaoke bar, where they meet Ethan's ex-girlfriend Diana and her girlfriend Sarah. Suddenly the marijuana hits Isaac and he records a video message on his cell phone saying that he is afraid of becoming a father. In addition, the rest of his marijuana is stolen from him in his condition.
The three of them contact Mr. Green again to buy marijuana from him again. They meet with him in front of Chris' mother's house, where Isaac receives the marijuana and is also shown by Mr. Green The Future , in which his daughter works as a stripper and his wife blames him for it. After this vision, Chris, Isaac and Ethan have dinner together. Isaac suddenly notices that he has swapped his cell phone for Sarah's in the karaoke bar, so the three of them set off again. While searching for Isaac's cell phone, Chris steals his marijuana again. Given the situation, the three split up: Chris wants to find the thief of his marijuana, Isaac is looking for his cell phone and Ethan would rather go to the Nutcracker Ball.
Chris quickly finds the marijuana thief, but she teaches him a lesson and criticizes him for taking his friendships more to heart. Isaac is now hallucinating heavily from the marijuana and takes part in a mass in the church, where he makes a monkey in front of his wife Betsy who is present. Ethan meets two drunk men dressed as Santa Claus who beat him up after defending Christmas.
After their respective experiences, the three meet again. Ethan is upset and in his rage explains to Chris that he knows that his sudden success in football is based solely on steroids , to which Chris replies that he and Isaac think Ethan is lost in the world and his life is not up get the series. Despite this discussion, the three now agree to go to the Nutcracker Ball. There Isaac finds his cell phone with Sarah and is relieved when she informs him that Betsy did not see the video. At the ball, Ethan meets Diana, who he makes an impromptu marriage proposal. The astonished Diana says yes, to the delight of all guests present, but later explains to Ethan that she really wanted to decline and only said yes, because he had embarrassed her in front of all the guests.
Ethan, ashamed, climbs onto the roof where he sees Mr. Green. He explains to Ethan that he started the Nutcracker Ball several years ago and has held it annually since then. He also gives him a little marijuana, which he calls The Past . After consuming the material, Ethan looks back at his childhood and Isaac and Chris celebrating Christmas with him. He then visits them and the three make up again.
As morning breaks, Isaac receives a message from Betsy informing him that she is about to give birth . They storm into the hospital, where the news turns out to be a false alarm. Instead, Isaac Betsy shows the video that he recorded in the karaoke bar. She admits that she is also afraid of raising a child and is relieved that she is not alone in it. Eventually the three spend Christmas together with Isaac.
Later, Chris has dinner with his mother and admits to taking steroids. Ethan apologizes to Diana for his immature behavior in their relationship, whereupon Diana forgives him and gives him a second chance.
A year later, the three friends spend Christmas together again with their partners and their families. In the final scene it is shown that the story of Santa Claus was read from a large book. This turns out to be the father of Mr. Green.
