action

The young Italian-American Jon is single. He has a busy sex life with no solid ties. However, he only finds real fulfillment in masturbation with the help of porn films from the Internet. Every week he makes a confession to the priest in the local church , which regularly only affects his sex life. When training in the fitness center, he says the prayers he has been assigned every time. One evening in the club , he meets the attractive Barbara, who has a romantic idea of togetherness based on the ideal that fluffy films draw. He contacts her via Facebook and meets with her. She initially keeps Jon at a distance and first wants to get to know his family and friends. Jon gets involved and otherwise behaves as Barbara demands of him: At her request, he goes to evening school and refrains from buying cleaning supplies for his apartment at the hardware store, because Barbara does not consider it worthy of his Clean the apartment yourself. She also demands that Jon stop watching porn, which he also promises. In the evening school he meets the elder Esther, who lost her husband and child in a car accident. She sees Jon watching porn on his smartphone and thus starts a conversation with him. After reviewing the history of his browser's webpage, Barbara realizes that he didn't keep his promise and breaks up with him. Dejected at first, Jon realizes with the help of his sister that Barbara only wanted to shape him according to her ideas. Jon begins to meet with Esther now. With her he can let himself go for the first time and really get involved in a relationship - albeit open-ended.

Reviews

The film received mixed to positive reviews and at Rotten Tomatoes reached Don Jon a value of 81%. However, only 67% of viewers found the film to be worth watching. In the Internet Movie Database , Don Jon was rated 6.6.

Andreas Borcholte writes at Spiegel Online that the film is “a modern comedy about the destructive power of distorted and idealized images in the media” and a “brute, entertaining directorial debut” . The means of the film can be criticized as “striking” , but it is “thanks to the dedication and acting skills of Gordon-Levitt and Johansson that both characters in their tragicomic nailing down can be taken seriously”.

For Martin Schwickert of the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung , the film is a “refreshing directorial debut” and a “lively comedy” . “Gender clichés [would] be infiltrated with relish, just like romantic conventions.” The film was “about the 'objectification' of love relationships and the troubled male self-image in the perfection-addicted 21st century.”

Age rating

The original version of the film was only rated as NC-17 ( No one 17 and under admitted ) in the USA and was therefore rated just like hard porn films. This classification is roughly comparable to an FSK-18 approval in Germany. Gordon-Levitt decided to remove some pornography in order to achieve the R ( Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian ) rating , roughly comparable to an FSK 16 rating . Otherwise the audience would be too restricted and the impression of a pure porn film would arise.
