10 Things I Hate About You is an American comedy film of director Gil Junger from the year 1999 , based on William Shakespeare's play The Taming of the Shrew is based. The action was moved to an American high school .

action

At his new school , Padua High, Cameron James falls in love with the beautiful Bianca Stratford, whose favorite pastime is chatting with her friend Chastity about the philosophical aspects of her designer clothes.

Bianca, however, is more interested in the handsome and intellectual low-flying Joey Donner. In any case, she is only allowed to go out when her older sister Kat also has a date. The girls' father, a single gynecologist , made this rule out of fear of an unwanted pregnancy for his daughter. Kat is known at school as a stubborn scraper, so her father assumes she won't get a date.

Cameron and his new boyfriend Michael get Joey to pay Patrick Verona , who is considered a hard rocker , to seduce Kat. The plan doesn't work out for Cameron at first, as Bianca continues to show interest in Joey. Patrick has better luck with the unruly sister - until Kat learns at a school prom that Patrick has received money for their dates. Kat leaves the ball angry because she is disappointed with Patrick. Only after the prom does she tell Patrick what she is feeling in a poem during class. Bianca goes to the prom with Cameron and learns that Joey's only interested in her is to have sex with her at the end of the evening. She stays with Cameron, and Kat is happy with Patrick, who uses the money he got for dating Joey to buy her a guitar.

References to Shakespeare

10 things I hate about you contains the plot and the naming of the characters and their characters, many references to Shakespeare's comedy The Taming of the Shrew .

Naming

Both in Shakespeare's play and in the film, the sisters are called Katharina and Bianca . The only difference is the spelling of Katharina , which is written without an h in the film.

Her last name is Stratford, which alludes to Shakespeare's birthplace Stratford-upon-Avon in England . In the play, Katharina's suitor is called Petruchio von Verona , which in the film becomes Patrick Verona .

The name of the high school in the film is Padua , like the name of the city where Shakespeare set his play.

action

Parallels are also apparent in the plot. In Shakespeare's play, Lucentio wants to marry Bianca, but first her older sister Katharina has to find a husband. In the film, Cameron doesn't want to marry Bianca right away, she just wants to go out with her, but like in The Taming of the Shrew , Katarina first has to find a date.

In order to still be close to her, Bianca's admirer pretends to be a teacher and is looking for a possible friend or husband for Katharina.

He meets Petruchio or Patrick, who is unconventional enough to get involved with the demanding, rebellious Katarina. In the film he agrees for the money offered by another admirer of Bianca, in Shakespeare he is satisfied with the dowry .

production

Stadium high school in Tacoma

The original script was completed on November 12, 1997.

The title is an allusion to a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning  from her collection of poems Sonnets from the Portuguese (" How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." ). At the end of the film, Kat counts on what she hates about Patrick in a poem read in front of the class, which is meant to be a recast of Shakespeare's 141st  sonnet ; however, she comes here to more than ten points.

Many scenes were filmed at Stadium High School and one other local home in Tacoma , Washington . In the film, the school is called Padua High School . The prom scene was filmed in Seattle within three days .

The costume designer Kim Tillman designed the dresses for Larisa Oleynik and Julia Stiles and the historical outfits for Susan May Pratt and David Krumholtz . The dress of Gabrielle Union for the prom was created by fashion designer Betsey Johnson  designed.
