With Prom (originating from English. Promenade ) is in the United States the prom at the end of high school called -year.

meaning

The “senior prom” corresponds to the high school graduation ball in Austria and Switzerland and the Abi ball in Germany, although the ball has a higher social status in the USA. It is run by the school management and is very popular with American students. Many American schools organize annual dance evenings ( School Dance ) for younger students, from middle school to stage. Formal clothing is also worn there.

procedure

A prom ball is usually put under a motto , which is then also used in the dress code. Basically, an elegant suit is mandatory. A meal, usually a rich buffet , is also common.

In the course of the event, a Prom Queen and a Prom King and possibly a Prom Princess and a Prom Prince will be chosen from among the younger students, who will be chosen by the students and who will represent them on the evening. Many schools have since abandoned this practice because they do not want to encourage competition for popularity among students; others link the appointment to an advertisement in which the applicants e.g. B. have to collect donations for charitable purposes.

In the USA it is customary that only 11th graders ( Juniors ) and the final years ( Seniors , 12th grade) are allowed to participate, but also sophomores (10th grade) and freshmen (9th grade) as partners . Students from other high schools can also be invited. Larger high schools sometimes also organize their own senior and junior proms , at some high schools the prom is only for seniors, who are still allowed to bring an underclassman as a date. In the past in particular, strong social pressure was often exerted so that only partners of the opposite sex were invited. In contrast, homosexual students have recently repeatedly taken legal action.
