Cinco de Mayo
El Cinco de Mayo ( Spanish for “the fifth of May”) or the day of the Battle of Puebla is a Mexican holiday . He commemorates the victory of the Mexican army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza over the numerically superior forces of a French expeditionary army in the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
The holiday is not legal and is practically only celebrated in Puebla itself. In addition, it has gained increasing importance in the Mexican population of the United States of America in recent decades , comparable to St. Patrick's Day of the Irish. In Mexico itself, this holiday is of little importance.
