Navketan Films

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Navketan Films is an Indian film production company based in Mumbai .

history

It was founded in 1949 by the brothers Chetan and Dev Anand . The production company's first film was a joint directing work by the two of them - Afsar (1950), an adaptation of Gogol's The Auditor . They then produced Guru Dutt's debut film Baazi (1951). With the commitment of the composer Sachin Dev Burman and the songwriter Sahir Ludhianvi , Navketan represents the transition from socialist realism of the Indian People's Theater Association , from whose circles Chetan came, to a commercial Hindi cinema thematically related to the working class.

In 1953, the third brother Vijay Anand also joined the company and, following his first screenplay for Taxi Driver (1954), developed into a renowned director in the 1960s, with the films Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963), Guide (1965 ) and Jewel Thief (1967) shaped the screen image of Dev Anand. The talents brought forth by Navketan include directors Guru Dutt and Vijay Anand, actors Johnny Walker , Zeenat Aman and Tina Munim, and producer Amit Khanna .

Chetan Anand retired from the company in 1960 and founded his own production company, Himalaya Films. In the 1970s at the latest, Dev Anand took over the management of the company on his own; it is now continued by his son Suneil Anand .
