Louis Vivien de Saint-Martin (born May 22, 1802 in Saint-Martin-de-Fontenay , Département Calvados , † January 3, 1897 in Paris ) was a French geographer , cartographer , author, translator and editor .

biography

Louis Vivien de Saint Martin came to Paris in 1814 at the age of twelve, where, apart from a stay in Versailles from 1865 to 1877, he always stayed. He was very versatile. In 1821 he was one of the founders of the Société de Géographie , in 1823 he published his first map with constituencies, the Carte électoral et administrative de la France under his own name. Further maps followed such as the General Map Atlas universel in 1825 and in 1826 he was involved in Bibliomappe , an atlas for children and young people.

Louis Vivien was also active in editorial work, such as B. at the Cours complet d'agriculture , which was published in 1834. He then dealt with the translation of Walter Scott and Thomas Bell . He also wrote his own works on the history of the French Revolution and Napoleon Bonaparte

From 1845 to 1855 Louis Vivien was managing director of the Nouvelles annales des voyages . In the period up to 1863 he wrote and published various travel reports and then founded the annual magazine L'Année géographique , which he ran until 1875. His main work included thorough studies of the geographical conditions of ancient India and Africa during the Roman era . Since he never retired, he published until 1897.

Like many scientists, Louis Vivien received the Order of Officer of the Legion of Honor . He was also appointed honorary president of the Société de Géographie in 1896 .

In 1867 he was elected a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
