Career

Club career

Mario David began his football career in 1950 with AS Livorno . After three years in the second and third Italian football league, David moved to Vicenza Calcio in 1953 . He played the most time with Vicenza, now second division, in the Serie A . After the promotion to Serie A in 1955, a seventh place in the 1957/58 season, his last for Vicenza Calcio, meant the best placement in the league for Mario David with the club from Veneto . For the 1958/59 season he then moved to AS Roma , from where he moved to AC Milan after 43 games and two goals for Roma . In a team with world stars such as Gianni Rivera , Giovanni Trapattoni , Cesare Maldini , José Altafini or Bruno Mora , Mario David won the 1962/63 European Cup with AC Milan as coach Nereo Rocco's team in the final at Wembley Stadium in London won 2-1 against Benfica Lisbon . This wasn't the only title win for Mario David with AC Milan. He also won the Serie A with the club in the 1961/62 season, when a first place in the table was occupied by five points ahead of city rivals Inter Milan . In 1965 David left AC Milan after 114 league games and six goals and joined Sampdoria Genoa . There and later at the US Alessandria , he let his career end. Mario David later became a football coach, coaching AC Ancona , Alessandria and AC Monza Brianza , among others . But he did not achieve any notable successes.

National team

Mario David was used on the Italian national soccer team three times between 1958 and 1962. He took part in the 1962 World Cup with the Squadra Azzurra . At the world tournament in Chile , Italy's national coach Paolo Mazza and Giovanni Ferrari used him in a game in which he became one of the main players, albeit in a negative sense. In the Battle of Santiago , the preliminary round game against the hosts, which was marked by fouls and toughness, Leonel Sánchez , the Chilean star player, broke his nose with a punch. Referee Ken Aston did not expel Sánchez, who had previously been suspicious of Humberto Maschio , who also broke his nose. Mario David, however, returned the favor to Sánchez and gave him a blow to the head and was sent off by Aston. In addition to David, an Italian and a Chilean player were sent off the field. The game was eventually decided for the Chileans by two late goals from Jaime Ramírez and Jorge Toro . As a result, Chile qualified for the quarter-finals and Italy was eliminated early.
