Alicia Rhett

Mary Alicia Rhett (born February 1, 1915 in Savannah , Georgia - † January 3, 2014 in Charleston , South Carolina ) was an American actress .

Life

After her father's death in World War I , Alicia Rhett moved with her mother to Charleston, South Carolina, where she became a stage actress. During a performance of the play Lady Windermeres Fan , she was discovered by George Cukor for the film Gone with the Wind and moved to Hollywood . She was originally a candidate for the role of Melanie Hamilton, but the role was given to Olivia de Havilland . Instead, Alicia Rhett was cast as India Wilkes, sister of Ashley Wilkes (played by Leslie Howard ).

After the great success of Gone with the Wind , Alicia Rhett received numerous offers for other productions, which she declined. She never appeared in a movie or in the theater again. Instead, she began to work as a painter of portraits and sketches. She illustrated a number of books, including South Carolina Indians by Beth Causey and Leila Darby , and made portraits of Louis E. Denfeld and Alexandra Ripley , author of the Gone With the Wind continuation Scarlett , among others . She also worked at a radio station. She returned to her home in Charleston, where she last lived in a retirement home.

Alicia Rhett was never married and had no children.
