Urbano Lazzaro (born November 4, 1924 in Quinto Vicentino , Venice region , † January 3, 2006 in Vercelli ) was an Italian resistance fighter in World War II .

Lazzaro, an official of the Guardia di Finanza , was arrested by German troops along with other officials in 1943 after the alliance between the Third Reich and Italy collapsed. After he managed to escape from custody, he joined a communist resistance group in northern Italy and adopted the code name "Bill". On April 27, 1945, his group arrested the dictator Mussolini , who had already been overthrown, in Dongo on Lake Como , who wanted to leave for Switzerland. Mussolini and his girlfriend Clara Petacci were shot on April 28, 1945 and put on public display in Milan .

Lazzaro was not present at Mussolini's execution. After the war, however, he took the view that Mussolini had been shot on the day of his arrest and published this in 1962 in his book Dongo: la Fine di Mussolini .

After the war, Lazzaro became an employee of the Piedmont Hydropower Authority . He later moved to Rio de Janeiro , got married there and had three daughters. He died on January 3, 2006 at the age of 81 in St. Andrea Hospital in Vercelli .
