Peter Schmidt (born January 3, 1966 in Peine ) is a German author .

Life

Schmidt lived from 1966 until his Abitur in 1985 at the Groß Ilsede grammar school in Gadenstedt . He moved to Clausthal-Zellerfeld to study geophysics . After graduating in 1990 he became a research assistant at the University of Kiel , where he met with a thesis on the 1,994 volcanoes on earth doctorate . He then worked for two and a half years as a scientist at the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials and then switched to the IT industry.

In 2007 he was diagnosed with autism in the form of pronounced Asperger's syndrome . Since giving a lecture at the federal conference of “Autism Germany” in 2008, he has been present with his own lectures and in the media. Bettina Böttinger described him as one of the most impressive guests on her talk show Kölner Treff . By presenting his perceptions as autistic, Schmidt makes the autistic experience understandable. One example is the story of concrete soccer, in which he describes the emotional perception and communication of autistic people as a black and white view of a colored world. Schmidt became the first self-confessed person with autism in a large German corporation. In 2012 his first autobiographical work A Cactus for Valentine's Day was published. The book reached number 19 on the Spiegel bestseller list.

In 2013 and 2014 he published two more books about his life with autism, which together with the first book now form a trilogy. In 2013, the second volume, Der Junge vom Saturn, was published, about his childhood and school days, and in 2014, the third volume, Kein Anschluss among this colleague, in which the author relates his perception of the world of work.

In 2020 he published his first textbook on autism under the title "Out of the ordinary - practical autism studies from someone who should know". After an introduction to the phenomenon of autism based on the effects of autistic perception, he works out, among other things, the basic characteristics of autist-friendly schools and workplaces.

His books see themselves as a plea for the diversity of being: “You only get access to an autistic person if you pick them up from where they are, if above all you never try to make something out of them that they are not and will never be able to be, but allows it to flourish with what it can offer from within. ”The quote shows that this is not a matter of course and that the author was perceived in professional life as both a service provider and a problematic case, depending on the framework conditions: "We don't really know whether you are the capacity or the resistance in the system, Mr. Schmidt!" - "That depends on the frequency , Mr. Professor!"

Peter Schmidt is married. He has a son and a daughter.
