Ludwig Dindorf (full name Ludwig August Dindorf , born January 3, 1805 in Leipzig , † September 6, 1871 ibid) was a German classical philologist . It has emerged through numerous editions by Greek authors that were reprinted several times in the 19th and 20th centuries. Dindorf's most important editions in terms of textual criticism were the editions of the specialist writer Xenophon , the historian Diodor and the Chronicon Paschale .

Life

Dindorf was the son of the linguist Gottlieb Immanuel Dindorf (1755-1812) and the younger brother of the classical philologist Wilhelm Dindorf . At the age of seven he was accepted into the Quarta of the Leipzig Thomasschule , and at the age of eight (after the death of his father) he advanced to the tertia. In 1814 he switched to the monastery school in Donndorf for a year and a half . On April 26, 1816, he entered the secondary school of the Thomas School again, was promoted to Prima in 1818, graduated from school on April 10, 1820 and began studying classical philology at the University of Leipzig . There he was strongly influenced by Gottfried Hermann , so that he increasingly turned to Greek textual criticism and published an edition of Xenophon's works Symposion and Agesilaos even before completing his studies .

After graduating, Dindorf lived as a private scholar in Leipzig. Together with his brother Wilhelm, he revised Stephanus' Thesaurus linguae Graecae from 1831 to 1865 .

Scientific work

Dindorf has continued his text-critical work uninterruptedly since his studies. For the Bibliotheca Teubneriana he edited the works of Thucydides '(1824), Xenophons (1824–26), Hesiods (1825) and Euripides ' (1825). The Xenophon edition appeared again with new annotations from 1829–31 by the Berlin publishing house Georg Reimer . Dindorf produced the first text-critically corrected edition of the Anabasis . He also treated other Greek historians: in the course of his life he brought out four editions of Diodorus Siculus (1826 in four volumes, 1828–31 in five volumes, 1842 in five volumes, 1867–68 his last, improved edition in five volumes) , Johannes Malalas (1831), the Chronicon paschale (1832), Pausanias (1845), Cassius Dio (1863–65 in five volumes), Polybios (1866–68 in four volumes) and the so-called “smaller historians” (1870–71 in two volumes).

A rather insignificant edition were the " Dionis Chrysostomi orationes" (in two volumes, 1857). Collaboration on Stephen's Thesaurus Linguae graecae in 9 volumes (Paris 1831-63).
