Franziska Schervier (born January 3, 1819 in Aachen ; † December 14, 1876 there ) is a German religious sister and founder of the Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis . Her feast day is December 14th of each year.

Life

Franziska Schervier was the daughter of the needle manufacturer Johann Heinrich Schervier (1784–1845) and his wife Marie Louise Victoire Migeon (1781–1832). Her godfather was Emperor Franz I of Austria.

Together with her Aachen contemporaries Clara Fey , Pauline von Mallinckrodt - both, like her students of Luise Hensel at the Higher Töchterschule St. Leonhard Aachen - and Josephine Koch, she was one of the pioneering personalities of the charitable-social movement of the 19th century and was already standing out from youth through piety and great charity. St. Francis of Assisi was her model . On October 3, 1845, she began a monastic life with four like-minded women, with a great emphasis on nursing (cholera and smallpox). Just six years later, Cardinal Johannes von Geissel from Cologne raised Schervier's association to a monastic community under the name of Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis . At the same time she supported the teacher Johannes Philipp Höver in his plan to establish the Order of the Brothers of the Poor of St. Francis also founded in Aachen

Franziska Schervier died in her hometown on December 14, 1876 at the age of 57. On September 14, 1876, she was first buried in Aachen's Ostfriedhof and four years later transferred to the crypt of the new mother house on the corner of Kleinmarschierstrasse and Elisabethstrasse, and finally moved to the chapel there in 1973.

On April 28, 1974 Franziska Schervier was in the context of a solemn liturgy in St.Peter's Basilica by Pope Paul VI. beatified. In memory of her and her work, a sculpture was placed in front of the St. Paul Church in Aachen in 1976 by the artist Hubert Löneke , the baptismal church of Franziska Schervier. In 2008 the process of canonization began, the decision of which is still pending in 2020.

Since 2010 she has been the patron saint of the newly founded parish Franziska von Aachen in place of the parishes of Heilig Kreuz, St. Adalbert , St. Andreas, St. Foillan , St. Marien and St. Peter, which were dissolved at the end of 2009 .

The Aachen Bishop Helmut This also declared her to be one of the patron saints of the “synodal discussion and change process” initiated in the diocese of Aachen at the beginning of 2018 .
