Francis Edward "Fran" Cotton (born January 3, 1947 in Wigan ) is a former English rugby union player . He played as a pillar for the England national team , the British and Irish Lions and the Sale Sharks .

Cotton made his debut for England against Scotland in 1971 . Three years later he was first considered for a Lions tour. It was used in all four tests against South Africa . The Lions didn't lose a single game during this tour. In 1977 the selection traveled to New Zealand and he was again part of the squad. One photo in particular from the game against the Junior All Blacks went down in history. It shows Cottons face full of mud, a symbol for the extremely difficult external conditions during the tour through New Zealand.

Cotton was supposed to play for the Lions again in 1980, but pericarditis prevented this. He could only be used in four games prior to the test series. At first it was even assumed that he had suffered a heart attack. In 1997, however, he returned to the ranks of the Lions, this time as team manager of the successful tour to South Africa. Since the end of his career, he has been running Cotton Traders with his national team colleague Steve Smith .
