Hans Vontobel

Hans Jakob Vontobel (born December 4, 1916 in Zurich ; † January 3, 2016 there ) was a Swiss banker and patron .

Life

Vontobel grew up in Zurich- Fluntern . He completed a law degree at the University of Zurich . He then completed an internship at the private bank Pictet & Cie in Geneva . During the Second World War he was active in the Swiss Army and its general staff. In 1942 he did his doctorate with Gottfried Weiss in Zurich with the dissertation "The separation of the competencies of welfare authorities and courts in the care of children of divorce" to become Dr. iur.

In 1943 he joined the private bank J. Vontobel & Co. , which his father Jakob Vontobel took over in 1936 and which then had twelve employees. In 1951 he became a junior partner and partner with unlimited liability. In 1984 the bank was converted into a stock corporation and Hans Vontobel became Chairman of the Board of Directors . In 1991 he handed over the office to his son Hans-Dieter Vontobel and became Honorary President of Bank Vontobel. Until his death, Hans Vontobel owned around a fifth of the bank's shares.

From 1967 to 1985 Vontobel was President of the German-Swiss Chamber of Commerce and from 1970 to 1990 a member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Bankers Association . From 1961 to 1971 he was a member of the executive committee of the Zurich Stock Exchange, from 1972 to 1986 he was a member of the NZZ board of directors . He was president and honorary member of the Rotary Club Zurich. Hans Vontobel founded the Vontobel Foundation to support numerous charitable projects.

Vontobel was married; the marriage resulted in his son, the banker Hans-Dieter Vontobel, and two daughters. He had been a member of the Zurich Student Choir since his student days .
