The Zurich Student Choir (StGVZ), also known colloquially as the Zurich Singing Students , is a Swiss student union in Zurich . The Studentengesangverein (StGV) was officially founded as one of the oldest Zurich university associations in 1849 and provides the official choir of the University and ETH Zurich . The focus of the activities of the StGV is the cultivation of song, friendship and sociability, according to the motto of the StGV "My curriculum vitae is love and lust and loud songs!". The vocal repertoire ranges from classic student songs and modern pieces to choral works from various operas and operettas.

history

The first forerunners of the Zurich student choir go back to 1818. In preparation for the triple centenary of the Zurich Reformation, the Singing Society of Students was founded in 1818 , and activities ebbed again in 1827. The student choir was first founded by Wilhelm Baumgartner during the regeneration period in 1839 , but the club's activities ebbed sharply when the founding conductor left Zurich for a few years in 1842. A renewed consolidation and second foundation of the student choir (StGV) by Baumgartner did not follow until the beginning of 1849, which is why January 22, 1849 is the official birthday and foundation day, on which a small foundation festival is celebrated every year . Since then, the student choir in Zurich has had active students as members without interruption. At the beginning, the members of the StGV were mainly members of other student associations and other students who enjoyed singing. Public vocal performances and concerts were given from the beginning. The StGV soon joined the Federal Singers' Association and was now able to compete at all Federal Singing Festivals, including a. with works by Wilhelm Baumgartner / Gottfried Keller . Gottfried Keller was a personal friend of Baumgartner and a frequent guest at the StGV. At the Dies academicus of the University of Zurich, at "Singer Rides" and at other regional and national concerts, people also sang - until today.

In 1862 the StGV issued its first statutes, which gave the association organization and inner support. After Wilhelm Baumgartner, Karl Attenhofer followed in 1866 as director (conductor) of the StGV. In 1869 the StGV was recognized by the general student assembly as a closed corporation (see also the principle of life union), and the participation of members of other associations, which until then had made up most of the singers, subsided.

In 1871 the Polytechnikergesangverein was re-incorporated, which had split off from the StGV in 1858. In the next ten years, the StGV transformed into a respected student association with Burschen und Fuxen (1875), Biercomment (1877), Alten Herren (1879) etc.

In 1887 the question of colors (or color ) and the circle of the StGV was not for the first time, but now finally settled (see table of basic data above). 1895 also the details of the caps and the full wax. However, a detailed written regulation of the use of colors (color comment) did not take place until 1937.

In 1889 the StGV fencing club was founded (see section fencing below).

From 1913 to 1917 Volkmar Andreae took over as director of the Zurich Singing Students. He was followed in 1917 by Otto Uhlmann and in 1923 by Hans Lavater . The first song book by the Zurich and Bern singing students was also published in 1923 , a joint production of the two associations, who have always had great agreement in their songs. From 1949 the slang term Zürcher Singstudenten was officially accepted for the Zurich student choir.

From 1959 to 1968 Ernst Hess headed the StGV's musical development as director and was replaced in 1968 by Ladislaus "Lazi" Rybach . This was followed in 1989 by Lukas Reinitzer , who conducted the Bernese and Zurich Singing Students for the first time. Martin Baur has been the director (conductor) of the Zürcher Singstudenten since 1997 .

Structure, activities, character

construction

The StGVZ recruits its members from students from the University of Zurich , the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ( ETH Zurich ) and, since 2003 (as part of the Bologna Process ) also from students from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences . The StGVZ is a pure male association.

The StGV is traditionally organized like other student associations in an old man's association and an Aktivitas. The Aktivitas in turn is organized in the groups Fuxenstall, Burschensalon and old active / inactive (see also building a student association ). Other elements are e.g. B. the beer families , the fencing club (see section fencing below) or the cantonal sections of the old men’s association.

activities

The most important activities of the StGV are:

  • Weekly general convention during the semester. There are also other weekly activities such as a pub , a Fuxen evening (joint excursions) or a Fuxen hour. Then of course the obligatory singing rehearsal.
  • Events with women such as the annual May trip (which Gottfried Keller also liked to attend) or the family ball
  • Regular Kommerse and pubs u. a. also with other connections
  • Choral singing (four-part male choir) with works by Mozart, Bach, Verdi, Wagner, Weber, Lehár and many more, as well as classical and modern student songs , operas and operettas
  • Regular appearances at singing festivals, choir competitions or singing festivals, at which many awards were won
  • In 1879 May was sung for the first time on April 30th at midnight in the Lindenhof and this custom has been preserved to this day and is listed in the relevant event calendars.
  • Since 1897 the StGV has been offering beer to the thirsty guilds on the Schifflände at the annual Sechseläuten parade. In return, he is allowed to take part in the so-called excerpt in the evenings of friendly guilds (as a so-called guild for the chaste lily stem ).

character

The StGV is characterized, among other things, by the fact that it has always maintained the strictest neutrality with regard to politics and religion and has anchored this in its principles. Tolerance is a generally applicable requirement. Schalk and jokes are actively cultivated. Open discussions, self-change and self-criticism are institutionalized and protect against mental encrustation and standstill. "We have a certain distrust of total abstainers. [...] Our motto may show how closely we are connected to animal seriousness. While many connections choose fatherland, manliness, bravery and other ideals, we singing students admit to the motto: My curriculum vitae is love and lust and loud songs! " (Name of the Couleurkantus / color song of the StGV ).

Color

Cap : Black flat cap with silver percussion, often embroidered with compasses. Old gentlemen sometimes with a barrel. Color band: blue-white-blue with silver percussion ( boy and fox band are identical).

The fencing club has been a member of the Swiss Armed Forces Ring (SWR) since 1931 ; the fencing club obliges its members to treat them respectfully and to ensure absolute satisfaction . The FC's slogan! reads: Neminem time, neminem laede .
