Ernst von Zitzewitz old came from behind Pomeranian noble family Zitzewitz and was the son of the Royal Prussian Major Franz Gustav Adolf von Zitzewitz (1807-1885), lord of the manor on the estates Beßwitz with Seehof, Püstow and Brotzen with pawns, and called Weck Mathilde Friederike Müller ( 1815-1879).

Zitzewitz was landlord on Beßwitz (from July 1884) with Seehof and Püstow (after the death of the eldest brother Franz Hermann in 1870), royal Prussian colonel and legal knight of the Order of St. John . In 1895 he was appointed a member of the Prussian mansion for life at the presentation of the landscape district of the Duchy of Wenden .

Zitzewitz was a popular target of jokes in his day, as he was considered snooty and dubious. The following joke is passed down:

“Colonel von Zitzewitz is asked in the officers' mess:“ Do you permit Colonel a joke? ”He is a bit grumpy:“ As far as I am concerned, but nothing indecent, if I may ask! ”“ Of course not, Colonel. The question is: Where are the eggs warmest? "" And where? "" In the frying pan! "The colonel laughs briefly and asks:" Tell me, what idiot puts his ass in the pan? ""

Zitzewitz married on December 9, 1859 in Stettin Helene (Nelly) von Salmuth , née Simon (1838-1924), the daughter of the royal Prussian captain Hugo Simon , lord of the Mariensee and others, and the Baroness Larissa von Puttkamer . As the adopted daughter of Natalie Freifrau von Salmuth , née Freiin von Puttkamer (sister of Helene's mother), Helene Simon was raised to the Prussian nobility without a diploma on December 28, 1857 . The couple had nine sons.

Nelly von Zitzewitz donated the church in Beßwitz in 1891.
