Onkel Kånkel and his kånkelbär (short Onkel Kånkel ) was a Swedish rock band known for their obscene brand punk rock ( Könsrock ). Front man and singer Håkan Florå (born January 3, 1962 in Kalmar , † August 15, 2009 in Stockholm ), who was able to maintain his anonymity throughout his life , brought the group the reputation of "Sweden's most secret band".

life and work

Håkan Florå, originally from Kalmar , founded the band in 1979 under the name "Bult", before renaming itself to Onkel Kånkel and his kånkelbär ( Swedish for "Onkel Klabuster und seine Klabusterbeeren "). In addition to singer and guitarist Uncle Kånkel (Florå), the band consisted of guitarist Stomi-Bertil, bassist CP-Sven, drummer Epilepsi-Kurt and special effects artist Arne Tammer. In 1981 the group was represented with the song Nazzepenis i Führerns anus on the Punksampler Svenska Tonårsgrupper Vol. 3 , the debut album Onkel Kånkels gyllene tider was released in 1983 on the label Konvergleichens Records. In the following two decades, Uncle Kånkel released five more studio albums .

During its existence, the band only gave a handful of concerts in which all members covered their faces with bandages or masks. She first appeared live in front of an audience in 1993 at the Hultsfred Festival . In 1999 Håkan Florå gave the Aftonbladet a one-off interview in which he talked about the band and its anonymity. He was photographed with sunglasses and a stocking over his head, private photos of him hardly exist.

"Många have a picture of mig som en completely uppenbarelse, type 1.40 m kort or 100 kilo tung, but before you dumb at the ifrån to form."

"Many have a picture of me like a completely bizarre revelation, a guy 1.40 meters short and 100 kilograms and it would be stupid to take this idea away from them."

- Uncle Kånkel alias Håkan Florå

Håkan Florå last lived with his partner and three dogs in Farsta , where he worked as a paver and gardener. He died of a heart attack on August 15, 2009, at the age of 47 , after not having played music for two years. His identity as Uncle Kånkel was only revealed posthumously, especially since he did not want his privacy mixed up with his controversial alias. He was described by companions as a funny and highly intelligent contemporary.

reception

To this day it is not known whether Onkel Kånkel was an actual band or a musical solo project. Florå himself spoke in 1999 of a band with him as the front man, like Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers . Until his death, speculation in Internet forums increased as to which musicians might be behind Kånkel and the other band members. In 2017 Tobias Forge , head of the heavy metal band Ghost , announced that he had briefly worked as a guitarist for Florå. On Swedish radio he assumed that Florå had recorded all of the albums with his portable home studio.

Onkel Kånkel's texts, riddled with plenty of faecal humor, deal with topics such as pedophilia , sexual intercourse and disability and were controversial in Sweden in the 1980s and 1990s. While some appreciated the irony , others condemned the music as disgusting and childish. Many considered the band, which was consciously polarized at times, to be racist and homophobic . In 1996, Inge Carlsson, a member of the Swedish Parliament , suggested that violent texts such as those of the band be banned, but his request failed. At the same time, Uncle Kånkel gained a reputation as "Sweden's most secret band" through their anonymity and rare appearances. In an obituary, Florå was referred to as the “mythical pioneer” of royal rock , a Swedish variety of punk rock characterized by obscene texts .

The commercial success of the music influenced by Povel Ramel , Martin Ljung and numerous punk bands was limited. Only the "Christmas album" Gammeldags jul reached a chart position and in November 1994 stayed at number 46 on the Swedish album charts for a week .
