Franz Ulrich Ries

Franz Ulrich Ries (born January 3, 1695 (baptism date) in Breitenbach am Herzberg , † November 6, 1755 in Marburg ) was a German Protestant theologian and university professor.

Life

Franz Ulrich Ries was the third of seven sons of Johann Tobias Ries (born November 13, 1652 in Schmalkalden ; † March 27, 1715 in Kassel ), member of the government, and his wife Juliane Margarethe Stückradt (born September 27, 1666 in Rothenberg ; † 26 June 1740 in Kassel). His siblings are known by name:

He received his first lessons since 1702 at the pedagogy in Kassel and continued this at the Collegium Carolinum ; There he gave a solemn speech in 1711, for which he received a gift of 200 thalers from Landgrave Karl .

In 1713 he began to study theology at the University of Marburg, where he attended lectures by Bernhard Duising (1673–1735), Johann Siegmund Kirchmayer and Johann Heinrich Hottinger (1681–1750). He expanded his knowledge of the oriental languages by attending lectures by Georg Otho , Johann Joachim Schröder , Johann Caspar Santoroc (1682–1745) and Johann Hermann Schmincke , who also directed his historical and philosophical studies.

From 1716 to 1719 he attended the University of Heidelberg , where he heard lectures from Johann Christian Kirchmayer , with whom he also lived, and Ludwig Christian Mieg , who significantly influenced his theological education. In 1719 he returned to Kassel and lived there until 1721 when he received the full professorship in philosophy at the University of Marburg.

By defending his dissertation de sacerdotis summi in Sanctum sanctorum ingressu with Johann Christian Kirchmayer, who had meanwhile come to the University of Marburg, he received his licentiate in theology. After the publication of his treatise de unitate Dei ex rationis lumine demonstrata , he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD.

In 1728 he became an associate professor of theology at the theological faculty of the University of Marburg; In 1735, after the death of Bernhard Duising, he was appointed third full professor of theology. His students included Johann Wilhelm Krafft , Johann Rudolph Anton Piderit , Johann Wilhelm Schröder and Nikolaus Wilhelm Schröder .

Franz Ulrich Ries was married to Johanna Jakobe, daughter of Count Friedrich von Ahlefeldt's personal physician and professor of medicine Jacob van den Velde (1676–1737); the marriage remained childless.
