She was a federal representative of Tocantins in the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress between 2003 and 2007. She has been a senator for Tocantins since 2007 and was the vice-presidential candidate of her party in the 2018 presidential election in Brazil .

Life

Abreu studied psychology at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Goiás ( Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás ). She was married to the fazenda owner, Irajá Silvestre, and the eldest son, Irajá Abreu (* 1983), is now also a member of the federal parliament for Tocantins. After her husband's death, she has been running the farm as a cattle breeder since 1987, which used to be in North Goiás and is now part of Tocantins. She has been married to the agricultural engineer Moisés Pinto Gomes since 2015.

Political career

Abreu is a party changer. She belonged to the Partido Progressista (PP) from 1995 to 1998 , to the Partido da Frente Liberal (PFL) from 1998 to 2007 , to the Democratas from 2007 to 2011 , and to the Partido Social Democrático (PSD) from 2011 to 2013 after its founding 2013 to 2017 the Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (MDB, formerly PMDB) renamed in 2017 and has been a member of the Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT) since 2018.

In 1995 she was elected President of the Federação da Agricultura e Pecuária do Estado do Tocantins (Association of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of Tocantins ) and was re-elected until 2005.

Moving to the PFL in 1998 earned her her first mandate as a federal MP, here still as a suplente , a deputy or successor to another elected federal MP, which also took place from April 2000 to April 2002. Here she became the leader of the Bancada ruralista ( agricultural faction ), a caucus- like lobbyist group of parliamentarians from different parties, then consisting of around 180 and today around 220 members.

In the elections in Brazil in 2002 she won her own parliamentary mandate, which she held from February 1, 2003 to January 31, 2007, with 76,170 valid votes. In the 2006 elections in Brazil , she was elected as a senator and, with 316,451 (51.29%) of the valid votes, was the first woman from Tocantins to receive this electoral office. In 2007, she helped to bring down the Contribuição Provisória sobre Movimentação Financeira (CPMF), introduced in 1997 , and criticized President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva .

In 2009 she was named one of the 100 most influential Brazilian personalities by the popular magazine Época . In an interview with Veja magazine she expressed criticism of the government's agricultural policy, in particular of the statutory norm No. 31 “Health and safety at work in agriculture, livestock, forestry, industry and aquaculture”, correspondingly “not its 252 individual criteria would have to be complied with once in a model company ".

In the presidential election in Brazil in 2010 , she supported José Serra of the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB), who was defeated by Dilma Rousseff . During the election campaign she criticized Rousseff, but this did not prevent her from accepting the post of Minister of Agriculture ( Ministra da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento ) in Rousseff's second cabinet , which she held from January 1, 2015 to May 12, 2016. Blairo Maggi was her successor as minister .

In August 2016, she had voted against the constitutional amendment proposal No. 95, now known as PEC do Teto dos Gastos Públicos (upper limit for public spending), as the Brazilian parliament is not required to be a party . In July 2017, she also voted against the labor reforms known as Reforma Trabalhista no Brasil de 2017 , which were intended to remedy the economic crisis from 2014 . Your voting behavior was directed against the government policy of President Michel Temer and against your party. She had also spoken out earlier against the impeachment proceedings against Rousseff and against Temer's rise to power. She was summoned to the party's ethics committee in November and expelled from the party as a result. The parties PSD and PDT offered her inclusion in the event of exclusion from the PMDB.

In April 2018, she became a member of the Democratic Labor Party.

2018 presidential election

Under the alliance's slogan “Brasil Soberano” ( “Sovereign Brazil” ), with the support of PDT and AVANTE , she ran as Ciro Gomes' candidate for the vice presidency .

Controversy

In 2009 Greenpeace Brasil awarded her the title "Miss Desmatamento" ("Miss Deforestation"), other environmentalists dubbed her as "Rainha da Motosserra" ("Queen of the chainsaw").
