Life

Blairo Maggi, known as "Soy King", belongs to Grupo André Maggi . It is the largest soy grower in the world, which also processes and exports soy and also promotes the necessary infrastructure such as storage, handling and transport capacities, as well as road and waterways. Its expanded power base is based on Aprosoya , the Brazilian umbrella organization of soy producers. The Bom Futuro group of companies is owned by Maggi's cousin Eraí Scheffer .

The Maggi family, who had previously lived in southern Brazil, moved to Mato Grosso in the 1980s. The André Maggi ( Amaggi ) group emerged from what was once a family business in just a few years . The city of Sapezal was founded by them.

Mato Grosso is the main growing area for soy in Brazil. Maggi owns around 400,000 hectares of land. In addition to soy, he also grows corn and cotton there. He himself is considered a land robber by environmentalists because under his government the state of Mato Grosso had the largest rainforest deforestation in Brazil. As governor of the state of Mato Grosso, Maggi campaigns for the Brazilian government not to recognize the land rights of the Enawenê-Nawê and other indigenous ethnic groups in his state.

In January 2004, Maggi took out a US $ 230 million working capital loan from an international banking consortium arranged by Rabobank, Netherlands. The banking consortium consisted of 11 banks, including WestLB and HSH Nordbank .

That is why he received the dubious “ Golden Chainsaw ” award from the Greenpeace organization . He describes himself as a nature lover and environmentalist. The activities of his company are examined very critically in the documentary We Feed the World , including the use of genetically modified soy , which is produced for the world market.
