Leopold Achberger (born August 27, 1903 in Preßburg , Austria-Hungary , † January 3, 1994 in Graz ) was an Austrian Evangelical Lutheran pastor. From 1947 to 1969 he was the first superintendent of the Evangelical Superintendent AB Steiermark .

Life

Leopold Achberger was born the son of a Catholic and a Lutheran in Blumenthal, a suburb of Pressburg. In 1922 he began studying Protestant theology at the University of Vienna , which he completed in 1928. In 1930 he became a pastor in the Christ Church in Gröbming in Styria and in the same year married the qualified pediatric nurse Erika Wetjen. On January 1, 1947, the Superintendent of Styria was established as a separate diocese , whose parishes had previously formed a senior council of the Superintendent of Vienna . On April 28, 1946, Leopold Achberger, who had previously headed the official business of the Styrian senior council, was elected the first superintendent of the new diocese. Graz was intended to be the seat of the diocese , but for ecclesiastical and organizational reasons the superintendent could not be provided with an official apartment in the city. Achberger was forced to resign from his post on July 31, 1947. On September 9, 1947, the Styrian Superintendent's Assembly declared a state of emergency and relocated the superintendent's office to Gröbming, Achberger's home community. In 1948 his son Friedrich Achberger was born, who later worked as a literary historian and Germanist in the USA. Leopold Achberger was in charge of the superintendent's office in Gröbming until 1951, when, with the help of the Styrian governor Josef Krainer senior, an official apartment in Graz could be made available. There he was assigned to the Kreuzkirche as a pastor. In 1952 Achberger's first wife died and in 1954 he married Elise Treczak. In terms of church history, Achberger, who retired in 1969, like his Roman Catholic counterpart Josef Schoiswohl, is considered a pioneer of ecumenism in Styria.
