Nándor Láng (also Ferdinand Láng ; born January 3, 1871 in Deliblát , Temes County , Kingdom of Hungary ; † March 17, 1952 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Hungarian archaeologist , historian and classical philologist .

Live and act

Nándor Láng was the son of a primary school teacher who died early. He attended the grammar school in Fehértemplom and studied at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. In 1892 he completed his studies in humanities , in 1894 he received a degree in classical philology. His teachers included the archaeologists and art historians József Hampel , Gyula Pasteiner and Béla Czobor and the philologists Jenő Ábel , Emil Ponori Thewrewk and Vilmos Pecz . In 1894 and 1895 he continued his archaeological studies with a government grant in Paris and visited galleries and museums in London, Belgium and Germany. From 1895 he taught at grammar schools in Budapest, including at the secondary Ágoston Trefort grammar school of the Eötvös Loránd University in District VIII . In 1905/1906 he visited Greece. In 1908 he became a teacher of Greek archeology at a technical college in Budapest. From 1914 to 1932 he was professor of archeology at the University of Debrecen and from 1926 also of Latin . From 1915 to 1916 he was dean of the faculty for art, languages ​​and history; From 1916 to 1917 he was rector of the university.

Nándor Láng dealt intensively in his research with the cult of Juppiter Dolichenus and wrote several papers on it. He examined the cultural and religious history of the Roman Empire , in particular the history of Aquincum . He analyzed and described the terracotta figures in the Aquincum Museum, the ivory reliefs of Heracles and Omphale and the torso of the Nemesis in the Hungarian National Museum . Láng completed the Ókori Lexicon (German Lexicon of Antiquity ) published by Vilmos Pecz (1854–1923 ) and wrote over 100 articles for it. According to contemporary scholars, he had a thorough knowledge of the sources and literature, and his work reflected the very latest in research.

The History Museum of the University of Debrecen was named after Nándor Láng in 1932. In 1949 it was merged with the departments of Classical Philology (Greek and Latin), the Department of Ancient History and the Archaeological Institute to form the “Institute for Ancient Sciences”, of which István Járdányi-Paulovics became the director.

Láng was with Elemér Császár the editor of the Egyetemes Philologiai Közlöny ( General Philological Journal ) of the Philological Society of Budapest from 1905 to 1914 and from 1946 to 1948 the editor of the Archaeologiai Értesítő ( Archaeological News ) of the Hungarian Society for Archeology and Art History.

Memberships

He was also an honorary member of the Hungarian Society for Archeology and Art History and a corresponding member of the Belgrade Archaeological Institute.
