Athletic career

Steffen Mauersberger's career began in 1973 when he won the GDR junior title in the ID card class up to 250 cm³. The next season he dueled Manfred Jäger and Fred Willamowski in the largest license class.

In 1975 Steffen moved from the motor sport club of the Zschopau motorcycle factory to the Suhl sports department on the 75 cm³ Simson. He was also able to cope with the small unit and immediately became Vice-Champion in the GDR. At the Six Days on the Isle of Man , Mauersberger was best in class as a single starter.

1976 was his most successful year. With victories in France, Spain, the ČSSR and Austria, he won the title in his first European championship season . The DDR Championship ended "Maui", as he was nicknamed, again in second place and with the Trophy team he was on his second International Six Days in Austrian Zeltweg third in the World Team Championship.

In 1977 he was third in the European Championship, again Vice-Champion in the GDR and second in the Six Days with the Silver Vase Quartet. The following year also brought him bronze at the European Championship and silver at the national championships.

In 1979 he was second again with the silver vase team at the International Six Day Tour in Neunkirchen in Siegerland. In 1981 Steffen came third with the trophy team at the Six Days on Elba . A year later he was a member of the GDR silver vase team and won the big pot with the quartet in the six-day trip in the CSSR.

In 1983 Steffen was nominated again for the vase team, but had to pass due to a fall injury suffered in the area around Zschopau . With this he ended his active career, but remained loyal to the enduro sport.

In 1990, at the last Six Days appearance of a GDR team, he replaced Walter Winkler as head of the GDR trophy team.
