organization

The crown possession Isle of Man held the event for the third time, after the 40th (1965) and 46th International Six-Day Voyage (1971) had taken place here.

Two important rule changes were applied for the first time: The penalty points were replaced by points in time. The ranking was from the lowest to the most points. There were 15,000 points per day for a driver failure.

The second change was that from now on only one silver vase team could be provided per nation.

Drivers from 16 FIM motorsport associations were registered for the competition . Teams from eleven nations competed for the trophy standings. There were also 13 silver vase, 34 factory and 40 club teams at the start.

The FRG took part in the World Trophy and silver vase. The GDR took part in the silver vase and Austria in the World Trophy.

A total of 1,663.9 kilometers had to be covered within the six days.

1 day

A total of 307 drivers took up the competition. The first stage of the day was 292 kilometers long, led almost once around the island near the coast and mostly contained road sections. The special tests were an acceleration test and a motocross test about 5 kilometers long on the Douglas Head peninsula. The first day of driving was overshadowed by a fatal accident: the American Bren Moran fell badly on a former railway embankment and died on the way to the hospital.

In the World Trophy, the team from Germany led ahead of Poland and the team from the Netherlands. The Austrian team was in 5th place.

In the silver vase evaluation, the GDR team led the FRG team ahead of Czechoslovakia.

On the second day, the route of the previous day had to be completed for the most part, 282 kilometers to be driven. The special tests were an acceleration test with volume measurement and a motocross test on Douglas Head. The weather was dry and cool for the time of year.

In the World Trophy, the FRG team led ahead of Sweden and the Netherlands. The Austrian team was in 7th place.

In the silver vase evaluation, the team from Czechoslovakia led ahead of the FRG and the team from the Netherlands. Ewald Schneidewind retired from the GDR team : he suffered a fracture of his left big toe and three broken ribs in a self-inflicted accident. The team slipped to 11th place.

3rd day

The third day's stage was the longest of the event at 311 kilometers and was a two-way circuit in the highlands of the island. The weather was still dry at the start, around noon it began to rain a little later with strong winds. In the section around the Snaefell there was fog with visibility of only a few meters as well as rain and sleet in strong gusty winds. In the afternoon the weather changed and there was light sunshine.

In the World Trophy, the team from Germany continued to lead ahead of Italy and the team from Czechoslovakia. The Austrian team was in 8th place after two driver failures.

In the silver vase teams, the Czech Petr Válek was retroactively excluded from Monday by the jury's decision because he had passed a time control 10 minutes too early.
Thus, in the ranking, the team from Germany was ahead of Italy and the team from the Netherlands. The GDR team was in 10th place

At the end of the third day of driving, 73 of the 307 starters had already retired.
