The International Six-Day Tour took place in Spain for the first time. The event was organized by the Real Federación Motoclista Española (RFME).

348 drivers from 16 FIM motorsport associations were registered for the competition . Teams from twelve nations competed for the trophy standings. There were also 20 silver vase, 36 factory and 30 club teams at the start.

BRD and GDR took part in the World Trophy as well as with two silver vase teams each. In addition, twelve West German and one GDR club team took part. For Austria and Switzerland two and three individual drivers were at the start.

A major rule change concerned the competition for the World Trophy: the riders and the motorcycles had to come from the same nation until then. As a result of the decline in motorcycle manufacturing in the 1950s and 1960s, the regulation on motorcycles was lifted.

At the end of each stage, on the first five days of driving, two constant special tests had to be completed. These were an acceleration test over 200 m with volume measurement as well as a terrain test. The latter had been shortened by the organizer from 6 to 4.8 km before the first day of driving. It led over a mountain ridge and contained motocross , enduro and trail parts.

1 day

Of the 348 registered drivers, 322 took up the competition. The route on the first day was 242.9 km, included eleven time controls and the special stages mentioned above. The weather for the region was late summer and free of precipitation. Since no more rain had come down since July, the road surface was largely dried out, which led to severe visibility impairment due to blown stone dust up to the third day of driving.

In the World Trophy, the team of the Czechoslovakia led in front of the team of the FRG and the team of the GDR.

In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team was ahead of the B-team of the ČSSR and the A-team of the GDR. The B-team of the FRG followed in 4th place, the B-team of the GDR took 6th place.

83 drivers dropped out of the competition.

2 day

A distance of 281.9 km had to be covered. Included were u. a. eleven time controls and the special tests mentioned. The weather was still free of precipitation.

In the World Trophy the team of the Czechoslovakia continued to lead, ahead of the team from the FRG and the team from the GDR.

In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team continued ahead of the B-team of the ČSSR and the A-team of the GDR. The B-team of the FRG still took 4th place, the B-team of the GDR slipped to 8th place.

24 drivers dropped out of the competition.

3rd day

The route on the third day was identical to that of the previous day, with a slight shortening to 277.3 km and had to be driven in the opposite direction. There were 13 time controls and the two special tests had to be completed at the end of the route. The weather was overcast in the morning, followed by rain and hail as well as a significant drop in temperature.

In the World Trophy, the team of the Czechoslovakia was leading, ahead of the team from Germany and the Swedish team. The team from the GDR took 7th place.

In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team was still in the lead ahead of the B-team of the ČSSR and the A-team of the GDR. The B-team of the FRG slipped to the 6th place, the B-team of the GDR took 8th place.

Twelve drivers dropped out of the competition.

4th day

The day's 254.4 km route led into the mountains of the Sierra de Guadarrama, with the highest point at 2205  msnm . The weather was rainy and cool, at high altitudes the precipitation fell as snow.

In the World Trophy, the team of the Czechoslovakia was leading, ahead of the team from Germany and the Swedish team. The GDR team was still in 7th place.

In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team was still in the lead ahead of the B-team of the ČSSR and the A-team of the GDR. The B-team of the FRG occupied the 6th place, the B-team of the GDR the 8th place.

Nine drivers dropped out of the competition.

5th day

On the fifth day of driving, a distance of 247.9 km had to be completed in the opposite direction of the previous day and the two special tests at the end. The weather was still cool and rainy, and hail fell. In places fog with visibility less than 50 m made visibility difficult.

In the World Trophy, the team of the ČSSR led unchanged, ahead of the team of the FRG and the Swedish team. The GDR team was in 9th place.

In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team of the ČSSR was also unchanged ahead of the A-team of the GDR and the B-team of the ČSSR. The B-team of the FRG occupied the 6th place unchanged, the B-team of the GDR improved to the 7th place.

Six drivers dropped out of the competition.

6th day

The last stage was 122.1 km. The final race took place on the 3.4 km circuit of the Circuito del Jarama near Madrid.

Trivia

Cause of failure of the GDR teams

The GDR national team won the World Trophy last year and competed with the same line-up in 1970. However, the team fell behind hopelessly in the competition due to technical problems and took eleventh and penultimate place in the final evaluation. On the third day of driving, Peter Uhlig retired due to broken piston rings . On the fourth day the drivers Werner Salevsky , Klaus Halser and Fred Willamowski retired. Their MZ machines neither started within the given time of one minute nor by pushing them. Even attempts to repair within an hour were unsuccessful, so they were forced to give up.

Since the engines were already having a hard time going the days before and hardly accepted any gas - the engines still ran smoothly when they were warm - it was initially suspected that the two-stroke mixture had separated. Therefore, the MZ machines were "shaken" before the start on the second day, but this did not bring any improvement. The next assumption related to an admixture to the fuel that ensures emergency running properties and is intended to prevent the engines from stalling due to the differences in altitude . But even with a fuel change there was no improvement.

The cause was ultimately found in a polyamide slide on the ignition system's breaker lever, deformed by large temperature differences . As a result, the interrupter did not pass on the movement at the crankshaft speed, which resulted in incorrect ignition times . However, this could only be ascertained after the above-mentioned drivers had left, since the rules allow repairs to the ignition system, which actually happened, but only the interrupter distance could be checked there. - A trial start is prohibited under penalty.

Thus, a failing component had serious consequences for the 3.50 MDN at that time  . In addition, this part could have been changed at any time according to the rules. After the cause was identified, these parts were changed on all other MZ machines in the competition and the problem no longer occurred.

Cinematic appreciation

In Steve McQueen's motorcycle racing documentary On Any Sunday attendance is Malcolm Smith shown. Other drivers can also be seen briefly.
