Špindlerův Mlýn held the event for the third time after the 32nd International Six-Day Race in 1957 and the 38th International Six-Day Race in 1963 had taken place here. The event was organized by the Autoklub Republiky Československé (AKRČs).

427 drivers from 19 FIM motorsport associations were registered for the competition . Teams from 13 nations competed for the trophy standings, and 26 silver vase, 29 factory and 38 club teams were at the start.

The FRG and GDR each took part in the World Trophy and with two silver vase teams. Switzerland took part in the World Trophy. Drivers from Austria did not start.

1 day

Of the 427 registered drivers, 379 took up the competition.

On the previous Saturday and Sunday there were heavy thunderstorms that fell on the motorcycles already parked in the parc fermé. - This is probably one of the reasons why 33 drivers did not get their motorcycles going in the prescribed time.

The route was 323 kilometers long on a circuit that had to be completed twice. It included 17 time controls, an acceleration test over a length of 200 meters including volume measurement and a terrain test over 5.2 kilometers. The weather conditions were drizzle and fog.

In the trophy standings, the FRG team led, ahead of the ČSSR and GDR teams. The Swiss team was in 12th place.

In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team of the ČSSR led ahead of the A-team of the GDR and the B-team of the ČSSR.

36 drivers dropped out of the competition.

2 day

The night before, there was a drop in temperature as a result of which the first riders who started had to clear their motorcycles from frost. The day was sunny and there was no rain.

The previous day's route, which had been modified slightly, was driven in the opposite direction. Route length: 336.7 km.

In the trophy standings, the ČSSR team led, ahead of the GDR and the Italian team. The Swiss team slipped to 13th and last place.

As on the previous day, the A-team of the ČSSR led ahead of the B-team of the ČSSR and the B-team of the FRG in the silver vase evaluation.

45 drivers dropped out of the competition.

3rd day

On the third day, a course with a total length of 294.4 kilometers was covered. The weather was slightly cloudy in the morning and sunny with a few rainfalls around noon. A motocross test was to be carried out as a special test.

In the trophy standings, the ČSSR team continued to lead, ahead of the GDR and the Italian team. The Swiss team was in last place.

In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team led ahead of the B-team of the ČSSR and the B-team of the GDR.

29 drivers dropped out of the competition.

4th day

The slightly different route on the third day was driven in the opposite direction. Total length: 275.5 kilometers. The weather was sunny. A motocross test over 5.2 kilometers and an acceleration test with volume measurement had to be completed on special tests.

In the trophy standings, the ČSSR team, ahead of the GDR and the Italian team, continued to lead. The Swiss team was still in last place.

As on the previous day, the A-team led the B-team of the ČSSR and the B-team of the GDR in the silver vase evaluation.

20 drivers dropped out of the competition.

5th day

The length of the route was 323 kilometers, a demanding section was cut out by the organizer before the start. The weather was sunny and cool for the time of year.

In the trophy standings, the ČSSR team continued to lead, ahead of the GDR and the Italian team. The Swiss team was still in last place.

In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team was also unchanged ahead of the B-team of ČSSR and the B-team of the GDR.

17 drivers were eliminated from the competition.

6th day

The last day of driving was very rainy. 115.5 kilometers had to be completed, which led over larger parts of the route of the previous day. From the destination Valterice , the final race on asphalt was held on a 6 km long triangular road course. Three laps had to be completed in target time.

Eleven drivers dropped out of the competition. Of 379 drivers who started on the first day, 220 reached the finish.

Trivia

Remarkable from a German point of view: Werner Salevsky was in the line-up of the GDR's national trophy team . His competition motorcycle had already been accepted, but one day before the start of the journey he developed an iris inflammation after a splinter had been removed from his eye the week before. Salevsky was unable to start on medical advice. In coordination with the organizer, a quick reshuffle of teams was allowed. Reinhard Fischer was appointed from the B team (silver vase) for Salevsky, while Karl-Heinz Uhlig from the ADMV's club team took Fischer's place , which, however, fell out of the ranking.

The entire A-team of the GDR (silver vase) was canceled due to technical problems. Dieter Salevsky (Simson 100) retired on the 2nd day with a gearbox damage. On the third day, Ewald Schneidewind (Simson 100) got it , his motorcycle probably had a piston damage. On the 6th day, Gerhard Haatz (Simson 75) and Rudolf Jenak (Simson 100) were eliminated due to engine damage .
