Garmisch-Partenkirchen was the venue for the event for the third time after the 16th (1934) and 31st International Six-Day Tour (1956).

The host was the Allgemeine Deutsche Automobil-Club eV (ADAC), Gau Südbayern.

257 drivers from 16 FIM motorsport associations were registered for the competition . Teams from six nations competed for the World Trophy. There were also 18 silver vase, 27 factory and 17 club teams at the start.

The opening ceremony took place on September 21 in the Olympic ski stadium in front of around 10,000 spectators.

1 day

Of the 257 registered drivers, 213 started the competition.

The first stage of the day was a circuit to be driven twice over a total of 378.2 kilometers. It led from the ski stadium over the Gerolder Alpe, Mittenwald , Krün , the Altlacher Hochkopf ( 1328  m above sea level ), Jachenau , Wegscheid , Wackersberg , Bad Tölz , Wolfsöd , Schönrain , Schönmühl, Frauenrain , Sindelsdorf , Großweil , Kochel am See , Walchensee , Eschenlohe , and Oberau back to the starting point.

There was heavy rainfall the night before and the first day of driving was characterized by continuous rain. Due to the weather conditions, the route management decided not to allow very demanding sections to be driven before the start. Also, a passage on Altlacher Hochkopf was no longer driven in the second lap because it had become virtually impassable.

In the trophy classification, only the Swedish team collected 83 penalty points, all other teams were tied without penalty points.

In the silver vase evaluation, the teams from Czechoslovakia (A and B), Austria (A and B), Poland (A and B), Germany (B), Sweden, the Netherlands and Italy (B) were tied without penalty points. The A-team of the FRG received 24 penalty points because Konrad Wellnhofer had exceeded the time. The GDR received 52 penalty points because Berthold Trappe exceeded the time due to technical problems with the fuel supply on his machine. The Swiss team received 5 penalty points.

There were only a few rain showers, but the track surface was still very soaked.

In the trophy evaluation, the teams from Czechoslovakia, Italy and Germany were tied without penalty points, all other teams had penalty points.

There was no change in the silver vase scoring for the teams with no penalty points on the first day. The A-team of the FRG had to record two driver failures: Konrad Wellnhofer was forced to give up due to technical defects, Sebastian Nachtmann had to give up after a collision with a private motorcyclist. Henceforth there were 200 penalty points daily. The GDR team received 10, the Swiss team 52 penalty points.

We continued via Kochel, Benediktbeuern , Ramsau , Penzberg, Frauenrain, Sindelsdorf, Großweil, Ohlstadt and Eschenlohe to Oberau. From there back to the starting point, the same route on the second day of driving was used again. A passage on Altlacher Hochkopf was removed by the route management before the start.

5th day

On the fifth day, the leg of the previous day, which was only slightly changed in two places, was driven in the opposite direction. Total length: 368 kilometers. A section of the route at Rotenkopf ( 1685  m above sea level ) in the second round was not rated after the jury meeting in the evening: Too many drivers had run into those in front and there was a dense crowd in this section.

In the Trophy classification, the teams from Czechoslovakia, Italy and Germany were tied without any penalty points. In the GDR team, Werner Stiegler was forced to give up due to a damaged chassis on his MZ.

In the silver vase evaluation, the teams from Czechoslovakia (A and B), Austria (A), Poland (A) and FRG (B) were still without penalty points. 6th day

The last day's stage was only 125.8 kilometers long and used the same route on the fourth day from the ski stadium to Krün. We continued via Wallgau and Obernach to Eschenlohe. From there to Sindelsdorf you drove the same route of the previous day in the opposite direction. From there it went via Tradlenz and Untersöchering towards Uffing, where you met the route of the second day and drove it to the destination of the day in Ettal.

The winning team in the respective competitions was determined by the good points achieved in the final race. This was held on a triangular course between the towns of Ettal, Oberammergau and Linderhof. The lap length was 7 kilometers. Depending on the class, the drivers had to reach a certain number of kilometers (see table) within an hour. This was converted into credit points.
