The Concelho de Macau ( Portuguese for Macau municipality , Chinese  澳門 市 , Pinyin Àomén Shì ) was one of the two original municipalities , based on the Portuguese model Concelho , the Portuguese colony or, from 1999, the Macau Special Administrative Region , which became effective on January 1, 2002 as part of the abolition the administrative subdivision of Macau was merged with the concelho das Ilhas ; the tasks of the former two local governments were transferred to the Instituto para os Assuntos Cívicos e Municipais . The area is congruent with the geographic Macau peninsula .

structure

Five of the seven Macau freguesias are located in the Concelho de Macau area on the Macau peninsula. In recent years, parts of the Novos Aterros Urbanos de Macau have been added to the area as land reclamation . With zone B of this, 0.46 km² of land was created on the south coast of the Macau peninsula, which was assigned to the Freguesia de Sé and is currently being built on as of March 2019. On the east coast of the Macau peninsula, Zone A, the largest zone of the Novos Aterros Urbanos de Macau, which has not been assigned to a freguesia to this day, but can be counted as part of the concelho de Macau due to its proximity to it, was created on the east coast of the Macau peninsula. Even further to the east is the heaped border crossing point of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge , whose 0.7 km² part of the Macau Special Administrative Region should also be part of the Concelho de Macau.

history

Until the transfer of sovereignty over Macau to the People's Republic of China in 1999, the local government consisted of the local council ( Portuguese Câmara Municipal ) as the executive body and the local assembly ( Portuguese Assembleia Municipal ), which formed the legislature as parliament . After 1999, this structure was initially retained with the Provisional Municipal Council ( Portuguese Câmara Municipal Provisória ) and the Provisional Municipal Assembly ( Portuguese Assembleia Municipal Provisória ). On December 31, 2001, the local governments of the two municipalities in the Special Administrative Region were dissolved and merged in the Instituto para os Assuntos Cívicos e Municipais. Its seat is the former parish hall of the Concelho de Macau, the Loyal Senate .

population

The population on the Macau Peninsula has been increasing rapidly for decades, especially since the transfer of sovereignty over Macau to the People's Republic of China. This results in one of the highest population densities in an urban area with 45,675 inhabitants / km². With a population density of 124,727 inh. / Km², the Santo António district is the area with the highest population density.
