The Freguesia de Santo António ( Chinese聖安多尼 堂 區) is a district or, based on the Portuguese model, a freguesia in the Chinese special administrative region of Macau . Within the city of Macau, the Freguesia de Santo António belongs to the Macau peninsula, which is congruent with the former municipality of Concelho de Macau .

Geography and location

The district is located immediately north of the historic city center around the Cathedral of the Birth of the Virgin and thus north of the Freguesia de Sé . In the southwest, the district also has a small contact point with the Freguesia de São Lourenço , with which the Freguesia de Santo António forms the shoreline of the inner harbor of Macau. There are jetties in the inner harbor along the entire coast. In addition, the district is bordered to the east to the Freguesia de São Lázaro and the north by the Freguesia de Nossa Senhora de Fátima .

The fortress Fortaleza do Monte in the southeast of the Freguesia, which is located on a hill or mountain with a height of 52 meters, is the highest point in the district. All of the rest of the land is flat throughout.

history

Since Macau's colonization , the south of what is now the Freguesia de Santo António area has also been built on. The Igreja de Santo António , for example , which was built in 1565 from wood and bamboo , testifies to this . In particular, the northern part of today's district was hardly populated and dominated by agriculture until the beginning of the 20th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the northern part of the district was the first largely urban planning area of Macau with Ildefons Cerdà's block system modeled on square houses and streets that meet in one square in Barcelona .

Development

With 137,200 inhabitants on 1.1 km² in 2017, Santo António is one of the most densely populated districts in the world with a population density of 124,727 inhabitants / km². In addition to the mountain of Fortaleza do Monte, the Jardim Luís de Camões in the center of the district is the only green space in the otherwise completely built-up area. Due to the small living space of a household, the close development consists mainly of four to six-story buildings, despite the high population density. Only in the northern part do many high-rise buildings with more than 25 floors fit into the image of the district. This also includes the 185-meter-high building complex The Praia with 56 floors.

population

Since the district's population potential was exhausted quite early on, the population in the Freguesia de Santo António has not increased as strongly since the 1990s as in other districts of the Macau peninsula or even the Macau Islands .

Attractions

Sights are mainly located in the south of the district near the historic city center. In addition to Fortaleza do Monte, these include the ruins of St. Paul's Church , one of the city's most famous sights. The church of the Freguesia, which in German roughly corresponds to a parish and whose name therefore corresponds to that of the church, is the Igreja de Santo António , which has existed in this place since 1565. In addition, the Freguesia de Santo António is also home to the Old Protestant Cemetery and the Protestant Chapel .
