The Freguesia de Nossa Senhora de Fátima ( Chinese花 地 瑪 堂 區) is a district or, based on the Portuguese model, a freguesia in the Chinese special administrative region of Macau . Within the city of Macau, the Freguesia de Nossa Senhora de Fátima belongs to the Macau peninsula, which is congruent with the former municipality of Concelho de Macau .

geography

The Freguesia de Nossa Senhora de Fátima is the northernmost freguesia of Macau and is the only one that borders directly on mainland China . The Portas do Cerco border crossing point in the far north of Macau is currently the most important connection to the Chinese city of Zhuhai , which borders Macau. At the end of the inner harbor of Macau, in the western part of the district, there is the Ilha Verde , the "green island", which is actually a peninsula . In the south-eastern part of the district, the district just extends to the outer harbor of Macau. In the southwest the Freguesia borders on the Freguesia de Santo António , in the southeast on the Freguesia de São Lázaro and in the extreme southwest at the outer harbor of Macau also on the Freguesia de Sé .

The Park Parque Municipal Mong-Ha (Chinese望廈山市政公園) and the Garden Jardim da Montanha Russa (Chinese螺絲山公園) put together with the center of Ilha Verde each increase. The three areas are all planted with trees and serve for recreation.

With an area of 3.2 km², the district just behind the Freguesia de Sé is the second largest freguesia on the Macau peninsula and, thanks to its high population of 246,600 inhabitants in 2017, has a population density of 77,063 inhabitants / km², which is one of the highest population densities for Districts worldwide, but is surpassed by that of the neighboring Freguesia de Santo António .

history

The name of the district, which is to be equated with a parish , is derived, as with all districts of Macau, from the parish church of the district. In the Freguesia de Nossa Senhora de Fátima, the eponymous Catholic church is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima, built in 1929 .

Much of the land area in the district comes from land reclamation , which began in 1919 with a narrow road connection to Ilha Verde in the northwest. The development process lasted for several decades and gained more momentum from the 1960s and 1970s, when the agricultural country with suburban character slowly began to develop into an industrial area. At the beginning of the 1990s, the Areia Preta, the last land reclamation to date, was completed. Today the entire area is densely populated and, in addition to industrial complexes, is also characterized by inexpensive residential complexes.
