Großweil is a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and a member of the Ohlstadt administrative community . The place is part of the tourist region Das Blaue Land .
geography
location
Großweil is located in the Oberland region on the Loisach between Murnau and Kochel . The Heimgarten (1790 m) and Herzogstand (1731 m) hiking mountains are not far away. The open-air museum on the Glentleiten is located in the southwest of the municipality .

history
Until the church is planted
Großweil belonged to the Munich Rent Office and the Weilheim district court of the Electorate of Bavaria .
1818 arose in the course of reforms in the Kingdom of Bavaria by the Gemeindeedikt the municipality Großweil that the district court Weilheim belonged.
20th century
Until 1962 there was a coal shale mining in the municipality . A concrete archway on Murnauer Strasse, which was built in 1917/18 as a protective structure for the conveyor cableway of the former lignite mine, is a reminder of this time. At the peak of 1920/21 up to 280 workers worked there in two shifts. The coal was initially mined in opencast mines and later underground .
The place houses the Catholic branch church St. George, which is late Gothic in essence and was later converted to Baroque style. The tower and extension date from 1835.
Incorporations
On January 1, 1976, the previously independent community of Kleinweil was incorporated.

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 1,141 to 1,486 by 345 inhabitants or by 30.2%.

The first mayor is Frank Bauer (FW). In 2020 he succeeded Manfred Sporer (CSU) (2002–2020).

Culture and sights
Above Großweil is the site of the Glentleiten open-air museum in the Upper Bavaria district. Its task is to collect original buildings from Upper Bavaria and to rebuild and equip them on the museum grounds. On an area of 25 hectares, more than 40 buildings from the rural and rural area between Lech and Salzach, between the edge of the Alps and the Danube can be viewed.

State road 2062 runs through the village from Saulgrub to Kochel . The Murnau / Kochel junction of the A 95 is located in the municipality . The place can also be reached with the RVO bus 9611 , which also goes to the open-air museum.
