The open-air museum Glentleiten is the museum of the district of Upper Bavaria for rural life, living and business of past centuries. It is located above Großweil in the Upper Bavarian Alpine foothills between Murnau and the Kochelsee .

Together with the farmhouse museum in Amerang , it covers Upper Bavaria as part of the regional open-air museums in Bavaria.

Museum concept

Several mills use the water from above down to the valley.

In the extensive museum area, around 60 historic buildings from rural areas of Upper Bavaria have been rebuilt on 38 hectares, including, in addition to larger farms, artisan and smallholder properties, in which in the 18th and 19th Century over half of the population lived. Another focus is the farming technology such as whetstone making , mills , saws and blacksmiths . In addition, several alpine buildings have been built. At the beginning of 2018, a brewery was put into operation in the new entrance building of the open-air museum . Other objects, such as a hop farm, are still to be settled. Events such as Craftsman's Day, Koehler Week, Mill Day, historical fruit variety show and many more show historical craft techniques such as weaving, saddlery or blacksmithing and give an insight into rural life in the past. There are also old-timer meetings of tractors. Exhibitions deepen folklore and local history topics. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from Josefi to Martini , on public holidays and on Mondays from June to the end of September.

There is also a folklore collection with over 80,000 historical objects, including furniture, textiles, tools and household goods.

history

The decision to set up a central open-air museum for the district of Upper Bavaria was made in 1971. In August 1972, the district bought a 15-  hectare area on the Glentleiten for 300,000  DM . Construction work began in 1973, with the groundbreaking ceremony on July 24th. The first museum director was Ottmar Schuberth. The museum was finally opened in 1976 with 13 exhibit buildings. In 1979 Helmut Keim took over the management, three years later the Amerang farmhouse museum in Chiemgau was affiliated to the Glentleiten open-air museum . After Helmut Keim's 25-year term in office, folklorist Monika Kania-Schütz took over the post of museum director in 2004 .

The museum educators developed a “house to discover” for children . It was opened in 2010 and aims to teach children what life was like in a small home at the beginning of the 20th century. Interactive puzzle stations deal with different aspects of life in the country.

Starting in late summer 2016, a new entrance building was built in a year and a half, which, in addition to the reception, cash desk, museum shop and a room for special exhibitions, also houses a museum restaurant with a show brewery, which is operated in cooperation with the Karg brewery .
