Erika Groth-Schmachtenberger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erika Groth-Schmachtenberger (born March 30, 1906 in Freising as Erika Schmachtenberger ; † March 13, 1992 in Würzburg ) was a German photographer .

life and career

Due to the father's activity as a royal real-world teacher, frequent moves shaped Groth-Schmachtenberger's childhood. She grew up in Würzburg , Amberg and Kempten , and graduated from school in Kempten with a secondary school leaving certificate. This was followed by a bank apprenticeship until 1924 before Groth-Schmachtenberger turned to photography. She first completed various photography traineeships (1928 Oberstaufen , 1929 Würzburg) and then an apprenticeship at the Bavarian State College for Photography in Munich, which she successfully completed in 1932. From 1932 to 1974 she worked as a freelance press photographer for publishers and magazines, and spent the years of World War II in Ochsenfurt . In 1947/48 she returned to Munich; In 1948 she married Hans Groth. In 1974 Erika Groth-Schmachtenberger moved to Murnau am Staffelsee due to its proximity to the Glentleiten open-air museum , for which she worked as a freelancer . After the death of her husband in 1986, she moved to a residential home in Würzburg. After her death in 1992, Groth-Schmachtenberger was buried in her hometown Randersacker .

Groth-Schmachtenberger's photos appeared in major German weekly newspapers. She traveled a lot through Europe, especially looking for landscapes, customs and handicrafts as motifs.

Importance of the work

Erika Groth-Schmachtenberger worked as a photographer for six decades. Photography was her job, but it was also an experience, hobby and purpose in life. She was a photo reporter who knew how to preserve youthful freshness in her professional career. Her work of over 300,000 negatives offers documents on the cultural history of the first half of the 20th century in particular. Her photographs do not present the past as an idyll, but as a peculiarity and reality of a past time.

Her work on the record run of the Bremen 1933 ( Blue Ribbon ), the collaboration with Leni Riefenstahl as a stand and press photographer ( above all documentation of the shooting of the film Tiefland ) and above all the documentation of the past everyday life, the professions and customs have important historical significance .

Today, many pictures by Erika Groth-Schmachtenberger can be found in museums and are shown in exhibitions all over Europe. From 1982 she sold or gave away a large part of her photographic works. More than 40 archives and institutions in Germany, Austria and other European countries have bundles. She bequeathed the pictures of various stays in South Tyrol, taken between 1940 and 1969, to the State Museum for Folklore in Dietenheim (Bruneck), for example . Her former workplace, the Glentleiten open-air museum , also has an extensive collection .
