Schwaigen is a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and a member of the Ohlstadt administrative community . It is part of the Blue Land tourist region . The main town of the municipality is Grafenaschau . There is no place in Schwaigen.

geography

Geographical location

Schwaigen is located in the Oberland region . The largest town in the municipality, the village of Grafenaschau, is located northeast of the Ammergau Alps on a flat plain drained from the Lindenbach to the east into the Murnauer Moos . A scattered settlement group from almost all other, smaller places spreads southeast of the main town in the lowlands around the Eschenloher Moos in front of the eastern edge of the mountainous area and drains to the Ramsach , which already takes up the Lindenbach in the eastern neighboring community in the Murnauer Moos and then moves to the Loisach .

In the southwest and south, the municipality extends after the ascent over the Aschauer Berg near Grafenaschau or the Schwaiger Berg from the Ramsach far into the Ammergau Alps, where it is at 1548  m above sea level. NN has its highest point on the (rear) Hörnle . The summit of the Aufacker Berg is only a little lower, and the municipal boundary runs over both of them.

Today's eastern and northern part of Grafenaschau used to be the village of Aschau, the southwestern part used to be the hamlet of Grafenaschau.

history

Schwaigen belonged to the court of Murnau until the abolition of the formerly imperial monastery Ettal in 1803 .

In the 19th century there was a glassworks in Grafenaschau, which gave the village an economic boom.

On April 29, 1945, US soldiers reached the place where Wehrmacht soldiers who had been displaced were still staying. The next day the place is taken over by the Americans without substantial resistance.

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 606 to 635 by 29 inhabitants or 4.8%.

In 2013 there were a total of 67 employees subject to social security contributions at the place of work. There were a total of 191 employees at the place of residence and 7 unemployed (3.7% - as of 2016).

In addition, in 2016 there were 15 agricultural holdings with an agriculturally used area of ​​623 ha and 1,617 ha of forest.

A village shop has existed in Grafenaschau since 2018.

tourism

The European long-distance hiking trail E4 runs through Grafenaschau with the Maximiliansweg . It leads to the municipality in the west over the Riss to the Hinteren Hörnle and in the south along the Murnauer Moos.

On the Glashüttenrundweg, opened in 2018, you can "experience" the history of the place, which has been associated with glass production for more than 100 years. It starts not far from the town hall and leads through several stations that have been equipped with "windows into the past" along important points in glass processing. It was set up in the course of the Bavarian State Exhibition 2018 "Forests, Mountains and Royal Dreams - The Myth of Bavaria" and is well signposted. As a "little mountain hike" it is suitable for children from 5 years.

In the village itself there is an excursion café and several holiday apartments.

At the Ammergaubahn there is a stop called “Grafenaschau”. However, this is located in the Murnau district of Westried, about 2.5 km from the Schwaigen district of Grafenaschau.
