Origin of name

View over the Murnauer Moos through the Loisach valley to the Zugspitze

The main reason for the naming lies in the history: at the beginning of the 20th century Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky settled in Murnau. Together with Franz Marc , August Macke and others, the artists' association of the Blue Rider was formed .

On the other hand, especially in autumn, the incidence of light over the Murnauer Moos with a view of the Loisach valley with the flanking mountains of the Estergebirge has a romantic bluish appearance.

The name Blauer Reiter may also have originated from impressions in the Loisach Valley: Kandinsky commented on the naming in 1930 in his retrospect: “ We invented the name Der Blaue Reiter on the coffee table in the gazebo in Sindelsdorf . We both loved blue, Marc - horses, I - riders. So the name came by itself. "
