38th international six-day trip

The 38th International Six Days Enduro was a motorcycle off-road racing competition , which from 2 to 7 September 1963 at the Czechoslovak Spindleruv Mlyn (German Spindleruv Mlyn ) and in the Giant Mountains took place. The GDR national team won the World Trophy for the first time, the silver vase won the Italian national team for the second time.

The decision to host the event in the ČSSR was made at the FIM Autumn Congress in 1962 in Luxembourg.

Špindlerův Mlýn held the event for the second time after the 32nd International Six-Day Race in 1957 had already taken place here. The event was organized by the Autoklub Republiky Československé (AKRČs).

289 drivers from 16 FIM motorsport associations were registered for the competition . Teams from eight nations competed for the trophy standings. In addition, 16 silver vase, 32 factory and 32 club teams were at the start.

BRD and GDR took part in the World Trophy and each with two silver vase men. Austria participated with a silver vase team. In addition, 13 West German and two GDR club teams as well as five West German and four GDR factory teams were at the start.

A total of 1571 kilometers had to be covered. On the first five days of driving, there were two special stages in each of the stages. These ten special tests were: two acceleration tests, a combined acceleration and braking test, four mountain tests and three off-road tests.

The maximum good score that a driver could achieve was 660.

1 day

Of the 289 registered drivers, 280 took up the competition. The route on the first day of driving was a circuit to be driven twice with 156 kilometers per lap. The weather was rainy.

In the World Trophy, Great Britain had two driver failures, Sweden and Germany each recorded one driver failure. It led the GDR team.

The Finnish team led the A-team from the GDR and the A-team and Czechoslovakia in the silver vase evaluation.

25 drivers dropped out of the competition.

2 day

The second stage of the day was again a circuit to be driven twice with 139 kilometers per lap. The weather was still rainy.

In the Trophy classification, Poland suffered a driver failure. It continued to lead the GDR team.

As on the day before, the Finnish team led the A-team of the GDR and the A-team and Czechoslovakia in the silver vase evaluation.

17 drivers were eliminated from the competition.

3rd day

On the third day, the stage of the first day was driven in the opposite direction.

The teams of the GDR, Italy, the USSR and the ČSSR were free of penalty points in the Trophy classification. It still led the GDR team.

In the silver vase evaluation, the Finnish team continued to lead ahead of the A-team from the GDR and the Italian team.

22 drivers dropped out of the competition.

4th day

On the fourth day, the stage of the second day had to be completed in the opposite direction.

In the World Trophy, the GDR team continued to lead.

The Italian team led the A-team from Great Britain and the B-team from the GDR in the silver vase evaluation.

23 drivers dropped out of the competition.

5th day

The fifth day's stage led over a total of 282 kilometers on a circuit that had to be driven twice.

In the Trophy classification, the USSR, which was free of penalty points, had to record a driver failure. The ČSSR also received two penalty points because František Höffer exceeded his time due to a fall.

In the silver vase evaluation, the Italian team was ahead of the Austrian team and the Great Britain A team. In the B-team of the GDR, Klaus Teuchert retired due to a technical defect and Hans-Joachim Wilke due to a fall with injury.

23 drivers dropped out of the competition.

6th day

The stage of the last day led over only 106 kilometers to Martinice v Krkonoších , where the final race started as the last special stage. The route was a triangular course on asphalt roads with a length of 7.5 kilometers. Depending on the class division, a certain number of laps had to be completed in the shortest possible time.

Four drivers dropped out of the competition. Of the 280 drivers who started on the first day, 169 reached the finish.

Trivia

The only female driver was Mary Driver from Great Britain. She drove with the starting number 172 on a Greeves , 250 cc and won a bronze medal in her class.

With the stuntman and motor sportsman James Sherwin "Bud" Ekins, an American took part in a motorsport event for the first time in a state of the then Eastern Bloc. Ekins started with the number 240 on a Triumph TR6 Trophy, 750 cm³ and won a gold medal in his class.
