organization
Garmisch-Partenkirchen was the venue for the event for the fifth time after the 16th (1934), 31st (1956), 33rd (1958) and 37th International Six-Day Tour (1962).
The host was the Allgemeine Deutsche Automobil-Club eV (ADAC), Gau Südbayern.
325 drivers from 17 FIM motorsport associations were registered for the competition . Teams from eight nations competed for the trophy standings. In addition, 25 silver vase, 34 factory and 28 club teams were at the start.
BRD and GDR took part in the World Trophy as well as with two silver vase teams each. Austria took part in the World Trophy. In addition, 14 West German and two GDR club teams as well as four West German, three GDR and three Austrian factory teams were at the start. There was only one single driver from Switzerland.
The award ceremony was held in the Bayernhalle.
1 day
Of the 325 registered drivers, 321 took up the competition. The route was a circuit to be driven twice over a total of 253.6 km. The weather was mild and sunny for the time of year.
Two special tests had to be completed. The first was a 3 km long mountain test under the Kreuzeckbahn . The second was an acceleration test with noise level measurement over 400 m.
In the World Trophy the GDR team led, ahead of the ČSSR team and the Austrian team. The FRG team followed in 4th place.
In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team of the ČSSR led ahead of the A-team of the FRG and the B-team of the ČSSR. The B-team of the GDR, the B-team of the FRG and the A-team of the GDR followed in 4th, 5th and 6th place.
23 drivers dropped out of the competition.
2 day
As the day before, a circuit had to be driven twice. Total length: 246.4 km. Components were again the driveway under the Kreuzeckbahn and a steep climb to the Dax chapel at the entrance to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
In the World Trophy the GDR team led, ahead of the FRG team and the ČSSR team. After three driver failures ( Stefan Pachernegg , Siegried Stuhlberger and Walter Leitgeb ) Austria came in 8th and last place for the time being. What all three had in common was damage to the ignition system.
In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team of the ČSSR led ahead of the A-team and the B-team of the FRG. The B and A teams of the GDR took 5th and 13th place respectively.
67 drivers dropped out of the competition, twelve of them did not start anymore.
3rd day
On the third day, the route from the previous day was driven in the opposite direction. A steep driveway was taken out the evening before, so the route was 3 km shorter. The weather was free of precipitation.
One of the two special tests was a 5 km cross-country test.
In the World Trophy, the GDR team led, ahead of the ČSSR team and the Great Britain team. The FRG team took 4th place after the failure of Heinz Brinkmann , whose motorcycle had sustained a gearbox damage. In the Austrian team, Franz Dworak was the fourth driver to retire , so the team was now on 8th and last place without hope.
In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team of the FRG led ahead of the A-team of the ČSSR and the B-team of the FRG. The B and A teams of the GDR took 8th and 13th place respectively.
Ten drivers dropped out of the competition.
4th day
A total of 290.2 km had to be covered. The weather was mild and sunny for the time of year.
One of the two special tests was a 6 km mountain test near Grafenaschau .
In the World Trophy, the GDR team continued to lead, ahead of the ČSSR team and the Great Britain team. The team of the FRG was still on the 4th place.
In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team of the ČSSR led ahead of the A-team and the B-team of the FRG. The B and A teams of the GDR were in 7th and 13th place respectively.
Nine drivers dropped out of the competition.
5th day
The route was that of the previous day and had to be driven in the opposite direction. During the night, heavy thunderstorms had fallen, which sometimes softened the road surface. In places there was fog.
One of the two special stages was a mountain stage, which was shortened from 5.1 to 4.6 km before the start due to the previous rain.
In the World Trophy, the team from the GDR continued to lead, ahead of the team from the ČSSR and the team from Great Britain. After the disqualification of Andreas Brandl (due to outside help), the team of the FRG took 6th place.
In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team was ahead of the B-team of the FRG and the A-team of the ČSSR. The B and A teams of the GDR were unchanged on the 7th and 13th place.
Two drivers dropped out of the competition.
6th day
A distance of 123.5 km had to be covered. The final race was held on a triangular course of around 7 km between the towns of Ettal , Oberammergau and Linderhof . The classes up to and including 100 cm³ had to complete four laps, all other classes six laps. The first two laps had to be completed as quickly as possible; penalty points were awarded for each lap not driven.
Three drivers dropped out of the competition. Out of 321 riders who started on the first day, 207 reached the finish.
