The event was held in Italy for the fifth time, after the 13th (1931), 14th (1932), 23rd (1948) and 26th International Six-Day Race (1951) had already been awarded to Italy. The organizer was the Federazione Motociclistica Italiana.

316 drivers from 16 FIM motorsport associations were registered for the competition . Teams from seven nations competed for the trophy standings, and 22 silver vase, 26 factory and 29 club teams competed.

1 day

Of the 316 registered riders, 298 started the competition. From Saturday evening there were heavy rain showers that fell on the motorcycles that had already been parked in the parc fermé. - Probably because of this, twelve starters did not get their machines going within the prescribed time.

The first stage of the day was 244 kilometers long, with five time controls set up along the route. There were considerable differences in altitude between San Pellegrino Terme ( 358  m slm ) and the highest point in the course, the Passo San Marco ( 1985  m slm ). The weather was cool and rainy, and frost had set in at high altitudes. The special test was an acceleration test over 400 m.

In the World Trophy the FRG team led, ahead of the ČSSR team and the Italian team. In the GDR team, Hans Weber received two penalty points for exceeding the time limit. A coil spring in the carburetor of his machine had come loose and caused the technical defect. The repair was no longer successful within the target time. The Austrian team took 7th place.

In the silver vase evaluation, the West German A-team led ahead of the B-team of the GDR and the Italian A-team. In the A-team of the GDR, Klaus Teuchert received five penalty points because he did not get his MZ going within the prescribed minute at the start, the team took 4th place.

44 drivers dropped out of the competition, 19 of them were disqualified for having timed out.

2 day

After the start, the route of the second day led to the northeast, the most distant point was north of Lake Iseo . After about 76 kilometers, a circuit of 58 kilometers to be driven through began. A total of 268 kilometers had to be completed. The weather was cool and free of rain for the time of year.

The special test was an 8.5-kilometer cross-country test from Bivio Guadal ( 900  m slm ) over the Monte Torrione ( 1300  m slm ) into the Valle de Bisci ( 700  m slm ).

In the World Trophy the FRG team led, ahead of the GDR team and the ČSSR team. The Austrian team improved to 5th place.

As on the day before, the A-team of the FRG led the B-team of the GDR and the A-team of Italy in the silver vase evaluation. Again Klaus Teuchert had starting problems in the A-team of the GDR and received two penalty points. Horst Lohr also received three penalty points for exceeding the time limit. The team was in 5th place. The B-team of the FRG took 9th place.

34 drivers dropped out of the competition.

3rd day

The stage of the third day was the route of the previous day and had to be completed in the opposite direction. The special test was also driven on the same stretch of track and in the opposite direction. The weather was mild and sunny.

In the World Trophy the FRG team continued to lead, ahead of the GDR team and the ČSSR team. The Austrian team was still in 5th place.

In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team of the FRG led ahead of the B-team of the GDR and the A-team of Italy. The A-team of the GDR came in 5th, the B-team of the FRG in 7th place.

15 drivers dropped out of the competition.

4th day

The fourth stage of the day led over 341 kilometers. After an approach distance of 81.5 kilometers, a circuit of 89 kilometers had to be covered twice, then the route of the morning returned to San Pellegrino Terme. The special test was a mountain test on an asphalted serpentine road, with around 300 meters of altitude to be overcome over five kilometers.

In the World Trophy, the FRG team continued to lead, ahead of the GDR team and the ČSSR team. The Austrian team remained unchanged in 5th place.

In the silver vase evaluation, the A-team was ahead of the B-team from Italy and the A-team from the GDR. In the B-team of the GDR, Rolf Uhlig received penalty points for exceeding the time due to defects in the electrical system of his Simson. At the end of the day of driving, Uhlig was disqualified because he had missed a transit check due to a procedure. The B-team of the GDR came in 4th, the B-team of the FRG in 6th place. The A-team of the FRG finished 9th after the failure of Rolf Witthöft .

Eleven drivers dropped out of the competition.

5th day

On the fifth day of the journey, the route of the fourth day had to be completed in the opposite direction. Again a mountain test had to be driven over around five kilometers. The weather was still sunny.

In the World Trophy, the FRG team was ahead of the ČSSR team and the Sweden team. In the GDR team, Werner Salevsky had to give up after two serious falls, which resulted in only 6th place in the ranking. Team Austria was still in 5th place.

In the silver vase evaluation, Italy's A-team led ahead of the GDR's A-team and the ČSSR team. The B-team of the FRG took 4th place, the B-team of the GDR place 6 and the A-team of the FRG still place 9.

18 drivers dropped out of the competition.

6th day

The last stage of the day was only 134 kilometers from San Pellegrino Terme to Monza. On one section, many drivers came together to create a dense crowd in this section. The route management therefore subsequently removed this section from the evaluation.

The final race as the last special stage took place at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza . According to specifications, the drivers had to cover a certain number of laps within 30 minutes according to their class, whereby the first three had to be driven at speed at the same time, as they were included in the determination of the good points.

Four drivers dropped out of the competition. Of the 298 riders who started on the first day, 172 reached the finish.
