The Bergamasque Alps (ital. Alpi Orobie ) are a mountain group of the southern Alps in northern Italy . In Italy, depending on the province or valley of the Valtellina, one speaks of the Alpi Orobie Bergamasche , the Alpi Orobie Lecchese , the Alpi Orobie Bresciane and the Alpi Orobie Valtellinesi . The main ridge extends over a length of about 80 km between Lake Como in the west and Lake Iseo and Val Camonica in the east. In the north they border on the Valtellina valley landscape . In the south they get lost with rolling hills in the rubble of the Po plain .

A considerable part of the Bergamasque Alps, especially the south, consists of limestone , which swings up from foothills to over 2500 m high peaks with pronounced wall formations. The highest peaks of the limestone mountains are the Presolana (2521 m) and the Pizzo Arera (2512 m). Due to their location south of the fracture zone of the Periadriatic Seam , they are assigned to the Southern Alps and, with their limestone mountains, the Southern Limestone Alps . The crystalline base of the Southern Alps is exposed on the steep north slope of the group and over large areas of the main ridge. Gneiss and metamorphic slates are widespread here .

Politically, they belong to the provinces of Lecco , Bergamo , Brescia and Sondrio in the Lombardy region .

The highest peak of the mountains is the Pizzo di Coca at 3,052 meters . On the main ridge, which runs mainly from west to east, there are also the Pizzo Redorta (3038 m), Pizzo del Diavolo (2914 m), Monte Legnone (2609 m) and Pizzo dei Tre Signori (2554 m), ranked according to height , as well as a multitude of other peaks between 2500 m and almost 3000 m. The Passo di San Marco (1985 m) is the only road that can be driven over the main ridge of the Bergamasque Alps from Morbegno in Valtellina south to Mezzoldo .

biology

The Bergamasque Alps are known for their flora and fauna that are widespread in small areas. Due to the little icing here during the cold periods, many species have survived the highest ice levels here. Some of the most well-known species are Bergamasque toadflax and Comollis violets . 2015, the moth was here Micropterix gaudi ella as only specific to the Alps seventh Urmottenarten discovered.
