The Bernina Alps are a mountain group in the west of the central Eastern Alps on both sides of the Swiss - Italian border in the canton of Graubünden and the province of Sondrio . Its highest mountain, the 4,049 m high Piz Bernina , is the only four-thousand-meter peak in the Eastern Alps.
Location and size
The Bernina Alps are bordered (clockwise from north) by Berninabach , Berninapass , Acqua da Pila , Poschiavino , Adda , Lake Como , Mera , Malojapass and Inn and cover an area of 1470 km² with a circumference of 181 km. Its lowest point is on the shores of Lake Como at 199 m slm , which is a difference to the highest of 3850 m.
Group division
The Bernina Alps are divided into:
Bernina group
East of the Murettopass, which is centrally located in the main ridge, is the largest:
Southern Bergell Mountains
To the west of the aforementioned are the mountains to the south of Bergell , also known as the Val Másino group . In abbreviated form, they are also called Bergell , which is misleading because it is the name of the north-lying valley (Italian: Val Bregaglia ). But the term Bergell Alps , which is also used, can be misunderstood, as the valley also has mountains on its north side; however, these belong to the Albula Alps (northeastern neighboring mountains).
Group of Monte Disgrazia
The smallest group, named after its highest mountain ( Monte Disgrazia 3678 m slm ), is located south of the main ridge (state border) and is therefore entirely on Italian territory . It is located between the Val Masino and the Valmalenco . The northern limit to the aforementioned group runs over the Passo di Chiareggio ( 3107 m slm ).
For the sake of completeness, it should be mentioned that the term Masino-Bergell-Gruppe appears occasionally, which summarizes the last two ( including the Disgraziagruppe as a mountain ) and thus means the western half of the Bernina Alps. This is also done in the Bergalbum under Bergell .
