history

Morteratsch glacier with hut (right center)

In 1876 the mountain guide association created the first simple accommodation not far from the left lateral moraine of the Morteratsch glacier. In 1906 the new Bovalhütte is built a little above the first accommodation. This is destroyed by an avalanche in April 1913. The new building at the current location can be inaugurated in autumn 1913. The extension takes place in 1977 and 1978.

Access

  • From the Morteratsch station of the Bernina Railway along the left lateral moraine of the Morteratsch Glacier, duration: a good 2 hours.
  • From the mountain station of the Diavolezza cable car in winter as a ski tour over Pers and Morteratsch glaciers , duration: 2 hours (due to the melting glaciers, this route is rather difficult and time-consuming in summer).

outlook

From the Bovalhütte you can enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding high mountain landscape. From here you can see not only the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers, which "separated" in 2015, but also the main ridge of the Bernina group including the highest mountain in the Eastern Alps with the famous Binaco ridge .
