The Pers Glacier ( Rhaeto-Romanic ) is a valley glacier in the Bernina Group in the south of the canton of Graubünden , Switzerland .
description
It is 4 km long, up to 1.5 km wide in the upper part and covers an area of approximately 6 km². The starting point is the Pers glacier with numerous firn fields on the northern flank of Piz Palü , over which the border between Italy and Switzerland runs, and on Piz Cambrena (3602 m). The firn-covered pass Fuorcla Bellavista (3688 m) connects the glacier to the south with the Altipiano di Fellaria , an extensive plateau glacier on the Italian side of the Bernina massif .
The Pers Glacier flows northwards at a relatively low incline of 10 to 15% and gradually turns west at the southern foot of the Munt Pers (3206 m). In the past, it flowed into the Morteratsch Glacier over a steep slope here, heavily rugged . In the summer of 2015, however, the Pers glacier melted back so far that the connection between the two glacier tongues broke off.
On the Diavolezza , a mountain ridge between the Munt Pers and the Piz Trovat northeast of the Pers glacier, the mountain station of the Bernina-Diavolezza cable car stands at 2973 m with a view of the Bernina massif and the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers.
