The refuge is located on the southern edge on the southwestern side of the Spallagrate of Piz Bernina ( 4047  m above sea level ), the classic summit route to Piz Bernina only a few hundred meters from the border between Italy and Switzerland .

history

The first refuge, which had 12 beds, was built in 1913 thanks to the financial help of the married couple Marco De Marchi and Rosa Curioni and named after them in honor of the two benefactors. Several Italian and Swiss mountain guides were involved in the execution of the project. In 1964 the CAI section Valtellina built a new and larger refuge a little above the old hut. The latter was demolished between 2002 and 2003 and completely rebuilt. The modern new building was financially supported by the Lombardy region and the Rocca family. In honor of the Rocca family, the new rifugio was also named after Agostino Rocca, founder and manager of the Argentine Techint group , who had a fatal accident in a plane crash in 2001. The old hut, built in 1913, serves as an emergency and winter storage facility.
