The last time a six-day trip took place in Italy was in 1997. In April 2011, the Italian application was accepted. The event was organized by the Federazione Italiana di Motociclismo .

Twenty teams for the World Trophy, 15 for the Junior Trophy, six for the Women's Trophy and 139 club teams from a total of 36 nations took part in the competition.

The main start and finish point for the event was the port city of Olbia. The parc fermé and the paddock were located on two piers in the port. The defending champions in the World Trophy, Junior Trophy and Women's Trophy categories were the French national teams.

Germany took part in the World Trophy and Junior Trophy as well as with seven (including one mixed national) club teams. Switzerland took part in the World Trophy and with three club teams. Austria competed in the World Trophy and with two club teams.

A total of around 1250 kilometers had to be covered. Up to and including the fifth day of driving, four time controls were set up every day and six special tests had to be completed.
