Erwin Schmider

Erwin Schmider (born August 26, 1938 in Kinzigtal ) is a former German enduro athlete .

Schmider caused a sensation, especially in motorcycle off-road racing. At a time when there was still no individual world championship , Erwin Schmider was eleven times European champion  - a record unattained to this day. With the BRD Trophy Team , he won the International Six-Day Race , and also won the International Silver Vase in a quartet. He started 21 times at the Six Days - 16 times he finished the world's largest and most traditional off-road sport event by winning the gold medal.

His national successes are also unmatched. In addition to 21 titles in motorcycle off-road racing, Schmider was also four times German motocross champion and won the OMK gold medal in trial sport nine times .

Athletic career

Born in the Black Forest, Schmider has been interested in motorcycling since his youth . NSU - factory rider Werner Haas was his model. Logically, he saved a NSU Max .

In 1956 it was first used in an off-road drive. Just two years later, Schmider won his first national title on an NSU. In 1959 he was nominated by the OMK for the trophy team of the FRG. In 1961 Schmider and the team won the International Six Day Race in Llandrindod Wells , Wales . Five years later he won the silver vase quartet in Villingsberg , Sweden . In 1967 and 1977 he was the single driver with the best points of all Six Days participants.

In 1968 Schmider won his first European championship. He managed to defend the title in uninterrupted succession up to and including 1978. He succeeded in doing this in the displacement classes up to 50, 100, 175 and 500 cm³ on special motorcycles from the Zündapp and Jawa brands .

On March 13, 1969, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf for his athletic achievements .

Erwin Schmider ended his motorsport career in 1988 after 32 years.
