Sir Matthew Nathan GCMG (born January 3, 1862 in Paddington , London , † April 18, 1939 in West Coker , England ) was a British officer and colonial administrator.

Life

Matthew Nathan was born as the second eldest son of the Jewish merchant Jonah Nathan and his second wife Miriam Jacob Nathan. His older brother Frederick L. was an officer in the Royal Artillery and later inspectors ( English superintendent ) of the Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills . Sir Nathaniel Nathan, the younger brother, was a colonial judge in the former British colony of Trinidad and Tobago . Matthew Nathan trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and, after joining the Royal Engineers, from 1880 to 1884 at the Royal Engineers' School .

He took part in a military expedition in Sudan in 1884/85 and in British India from 1889 to 1894 . In 1889 he was promoted to captain . Between 1896 and 1898 he was chairman of the Colonial Defense Committee and was also promoted to major in 1898 . From 1899 to 1900 he was Deputy Governor of Sierra Leone . In 1900 he became governor of the Gold Coast and remained so until 1903. In the same year he became governor of Hong Kong , he held this office until 1907 and in the same year was governor of Natal until 1909. He then returned to England and held various offices , among other things, he was under secretary for Ireland (under-secretary for Ireland).

In 1920 was appointed Governor of Queensland and held that office until 1925. He then returned to England and spent his retirement in Somerset .

Others

The Nathan community in Queensland , Australia and some streets, such as Nathan Road , the main street of Kowloons in Hong Kong , are named after him.
